Other Sea Life

Needless to say, the ocean is full of life. Too many things for me to mention or even to know about. The Jellyfish are worth mentioning though. (Photo at top of page) We have a dock in the back yard, at night, the jellyfish, swim by. They glow under the water in different colors at night. Blue, green, yellow, red, pink, purple, all like neon spots going by.

The first time I saw them, I did not know what they were, thought maybe I was seeing things, then decided it was reflections of some sort, after a while, I could not stand it anymore. I got a net, scooped up a few, and they were jellyfish. Out of the water, they were a clear jellied blob again. Some of them have little tendrils on them. Some are just round and flat. But in the air, they had lost all neon colors. Once I put the net back into the water, they again began to glow. In the daytime, in the boat, we see them in schools at times, they stay near the surface of the water. They are always clear in color, during the days, as they are when out of the water at night. It is very interesting trying to figure these small creatures out.

The plant life, so many types, are also mentionable, because of the spectacular colors, shapes and sizes. Of course, the fish, shell creatures, mammals, corals, lobster, seaturtles, etc. are all worth mentioning, too = but not only do I not know all about them, but that amount of information would never fit into the space alloted for my page!

I do want to mention the crabs, there are several types, but in our canal, we get blue crab. Good eating, so I have been told,(I don't eat seafood) and everyone who lives on canals, have crab traps, among other types, and catch the crabs daily. This is great fun, and can be a money making venture, as many in town have discovered. We, however, catch them, and then either release them or give them to neighbors for eating.
