John KIDD Family of Chester and York Counties, SC

John Kidd appears to have settled in the area of upper South Carolina that was disputed with North Carolina at the time. He received a "deed of release" for 400 acres of land on the South Branch of Fishing Creek joining Benjamin Lewis' land in 1772. This land was originally granted to Andrew Meek on 10 Nov 1764. Memorial signed by John Murphy on 21 Jan 1772. This document is in Vol II, pg 442 of the Memorial Books in the South Carolina Archives.

This land was thought to be in Old Tryon County, North Carolina, but when surveyed out, was found to be in Chester District, South Carolina. The area was known as Fishing Creek Settlement. Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church was in this same area.

It is not known at this time where John Kidd came from. There are hints that he and his family, like many other Scotch-Irish families, migrated south from the Lancaster, York, and Chester county area of Pennsylvania prior to the Revolutionary War. Certainly, the Kidd families of South Carolina bore many names in common with their counterparts in Pennsylvania. Some of the families with whom the Kidd's intermarried have definite connections with Pennsylvania.
