OUR ADVENTURES

We sometimes hear the call
to step out the garden gate,
to explore the world around us.
The weeding can always wait.

Live each day to the fullest.
Life can be a fragile thing.
So seize the day, loosen up,
and let your laughter ring.

These are our summer's adventures. It's not that we don't have any fun the rest of the year. It's just that living in northern NY, many activities are only available in the summer. We tend to keep travel plans to a minimum in the winter because you never know when Mother Nature will dump 3 feet of lake effect snow in your lap.

The girls spent the beginning of August at Camp Aldersgate; a United Methodist Church Camp located in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. This year they chose "Horse Camp" for their Aldersgate adventure. This was Deanna's 4th year at Aldersgate and Christiana's 2nd. Deanna isn't phased a bit by the more rustic accomodations of the wilderness area. Christiana, however, has informed me that she much prefered the cabins over the wilderness area. Of course being from NY City she tends to think of anyplace without pavement as wilderness. Personally I could do without the pavement but I would choose the cabins over those platform tents. My adventure during those 5 very quiet and peaceful days - just sat back, enjoyed the calmness, and started my webpage. I don't know of a website for Aldersgate or it's sister camp, Casowasco, in the Fingerlakes region but you could get more info through a local church if you are anywhere close by.

The girls and I, my friend and her 3 girls, and my 2 nephews took a nice day trip to Enchanted Forest-Water Safari("Where the fun never stops")located in the Adirondacks at Old Forge NY. It is a very wet time with an assortment of water rides. The kids loved it. The favorite expression of the day - "Can we go on it again!?!"

In case you can't tell that grey bump in the water is a humpback whale. Our Girl Scout trip this year was to Newburyport and Salem,MA. We went whale watching out of Newburyport. It was absolutely fabulous! Newburyport is a quaint village with many shops to browse through. Salem is a bewitching town, as you can imagine. The history there is very intriguing.

If you like theme parks or roller coasters you would like Darien Lake. My personal favorite attraction - Hook's Lagoon (pictured above). The kids love it and the grown-ups can either join in or relax in the beach chairs that surround it. If you stay at the campground or in their new lodge you can wander in and out of the park as you please. This makes it convenient to have a relaxation or lunch break away from the crowds and fast food in the park. There is also shopping not far away (in Buffalo) for those rainy days like this last 4th of July.

Here are a couple of last year's adventures that I feel are worth mentioning.

Who are these girls who keep showing up on my website?
Here they are at the Renaissance Festival in Sterling, NY. This is a most excellent time. They charge a supposed all inclusive admission but be prepared to spend more than you planned. If you have children they'll want to ride the man-powered rides (extra charge). You'll all want to go through the maze (extra charge). There is alot of food (charge, charge) and you have to walk around gnawing on a turkey leg or it wouldn't be the renaissance! There are many artisans to buy from (major charges). I loved the chain-mail skirt but where ever would I wear that!? They have costumes to rent (over charge)but they were too expensive in my opinion, especially if you want something fancy. Tell me what preteen girl would want to dress as a beggar instead of a princess. We were prepared this time (our 2nd visit).I made the girls costumes in advance (added bonus - Halloween costumes were done). All the shows, joust, ect. ARE included in your all inclusive admission and it's fun to just wander among the villagers. We plan on making it back there next summer.

Toronto, Ontario, Canada is a great place with too many points of interest to list on my little webpage. My personal reason for braving the traffic in and around Toronto - Theater. A friend and her daughter, and the girls and me had a marvelous girls weekend out in Toronto. The picture above was taken from our hotel room on the 29th floor. We saw "Grease" and "Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" while we were there.
If you ever get a chance to see the National Ballet of Canada Don't miss it!! Their sets and costumes are totally awesome. Oh, and their dancing's cool too. I've seen them perform "Cinderella" and "Arabian Nights". I would love to get there to see "The Nutcracker" but I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to face the traffic and the weather at the same time. Even if you're not a big theater fan, everyone should get to the Pantages Theater to see "The Phantom Of The Opera" at least once in their life.

Thanks for stopping in and and letting me share our adventures with you.
I hope you enjoyed your stay. Feel free to come back any time.
Thanks goes to Jeffery at Media Link for the background and separator bars.
