The BFT is aware and sensitive to the issues concerning the use and security of personal information on the Internet. For this reason, we post this policy to answer those frequently asked questions.
The BFT is a genealogy site, the very definition of which means the collection of personal data. Because the BFT allows genealogists and researchers worldwide to post their research on Broughton ancestors and descendants in an effort to provide the public a freely accessible genealogical resource on the Internet, we cannot possibly confirm or obtain permission from each individual source upon which data is contributed. Submitters are instructed that they must get permission from every living individual included in their submitted data before submitting that information to Broughton Family Tree. The same policy exists for information obtained from copyrighted or otherwise legally protected sources. Submitters are instructed to obtain permission from the sources creator/author when possible and to always inform the BFT of when data should be credited to a certain source. Otherwise the information should NOT be submitted to the BFT.
We do not knowingly collect information from children under 18. They are advised to get permission from their parents before they send any information about themselves or others. We do not knowingly collect or post copyrighted or otherwise legally protected material.

Information that is voluntarily disclosed through research contributed to the BFT may be posted publicly. The information and it's presentation on the BFT becomes the copyrighted property of the BFT. This information is provided freely and is for non-commercial research purposes only.
When users request pages from BFT, which is hosted by Yahoo-Geocities, their servers may log the users IP address. An IP address is a number that is automatically assigned to a computer whenever users surf the web. This information may be used to improve site administration. The information also may be used to produce usage statistics. These statistics help us better meet the needs of our users by providing information about research interests. Please contact Yahoo or Geocities for their policy on privacy and security.
How do we protect customer information?
The BFT relies on its hosts, Yahoo and Geocities, which have security
measures in place to help protect against the loss, misuse, and
unauthorized alteration of the information under our control.
However, because no security measures are foolproof, we cannot
guarantee that information will not be lost or misused.
From some pages, personal information such as users name and email address, are requested and gathered. This information, which in all cases is forwarded by Yahoo/Geocities to the ISP email account for the BFT webmaster, is kept confidentially by the BFT webmaster. It is used for the sole purpose of communicating with BFT users who have provided the information through one of our email/submission forms. NONE of the information gathered from these forms is EVER sold to spammers or any other type of e-mail gatherers. It is also NEVER knowingly provided to outside sources without the express permission of the user himself. In the case of the BFT Guest Book and Inquiry Forum, however, this policy does not apply. Email addresses posted there are posted publicly and could result in users receiving communications from other BFT visitors.
Please check the Privacy Policy each time you access the site for changes. We reserve the right, at our discretion, to change, modify, add, or remove portions of the Privacy Policy at any time.
The Broughton Family Tree ( "BFT") is an on-line listing of genealogical data gathered by various private citizens of numerous countries. The BFT maintains the web site as a service to the Internet community. Use of the BFT is subject to the following terms and conditions. The BFT may revise these terms and conditions from time to time without prior notice.
The entire contents of the BFT is copyrighted. Copyrights are owned by the BFT and/or its hosts, associations or referenced web sites and literary sources. The BFT may be linked to from your Web site for viewing by other persons provided that you do not charge for such use. You may use and reproduce individual or small selections of textual data for personal use, provided that you do not make any charge for such use, do not collect multiple small selections for the purpose of replicating all or substantial portions of the BFT.
The aforementioned permission pertaining to textual data does not include the copying or replication of graphics, backgrounds, pictures, buttons, and so forth. ALL GRAPHICS ARE FOR THE EXCLUSIVE USE ON THE BFT, AND ARE NOT TO BE DUPLICATED, COPIED, REPUBLISHED, OR REPRODUCED IN ANY WAY OR MANNER WITHOUT THE EXPRESS WRITTEN PERMISSION OF THE BFT WEBMASTER OR OTHER LEGAL BFT REPRESENTATIVE. In the rare cases where graphics are obtained from alternative sources and used on the BFT, credit is provided on the page(s) where the graphic is used (usually at the bottom). In these cases, permission should be obtained from the original source from which the graphic was obtained.
The BFT does not investigate any of the parties whose information is listed in the site, and does not make any guarantee or warranty or assume any liability or responsibility for any such party, nor can BFT assist in complaints by any user of any such party.
The BFT webmaster will use reasonable efforts to include accurate and up to date information on the BFT, but ALL USERS AND PERSONS SUBMITTING DATA AGREE THAT ALL USE OF THE BFT IS AT THEIR OWN RISK. NEITHER THE BFT NOR ITS WEBMASTER, INFORMATION OR SERVICE PROVIDER, HOST(S) OR OTHER PARTY LISTED ON THE BFT, NOR ANY OTHER PARTY INVOLVED IN CREATING, PRODUCING OR DELIVERING THE BFT, SHALL BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, INDIRECT OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE THE BFT, ANY ERRORS, INCLUSIONS OR OMISSIONS IN THE DATA AND SERVICES PROVIDED OR OBTAINED.
This is an offer to provide information and services, and acceptance is expressly conditioned upon acceptance of these terms and only these terms. This agreement represents the entire agreement between users of and providers of the BFT and the BFT and supersedes any and all other communications, prior, contemporaneous or subsequent, and any course of performance or course of dealing, except as modified by a written agreement signed by an authorized official of the BFT, or by the BFT revising these terms and conditions of use (provided, however, that any such revision shall take effect after the date of such revision).
This agreement shall be in effect from your first use of the BFT. The BFT reserves the right to deny access of any service provided by the BFT to any user, however, the disclaimers and limits of liability above shall survive termination for any reason. This agreement shall be governed by the laws of Wisconsin, as a contract made and performed in that state.
