CARDELL FAMILY

Henry T. CARDELL was my great grandfather. He married Mary (HAMBY) ROUTON, in 1885. They lived near Waco, Texas, at Richland Springs when Henry, and an infant son died. We do not know who Henry Cardell's parents were, or where Henry was born. Mary (HAMBY) was the daughter of W. ("T" in some records)H. and Priscilla (CLIFTON) HAMBY. Hamby Hill, near Austin, Tx. was named for this family. Priscilla (Clifton) Hamby was the daughter of Thomas and Henrietta (Walden) Clifton. Henrietta later married John Braden, her lawyer, and moved to Barry Co., Missouri. There is more sketchy information on this family. Mary Hamby first had married WILLIAM PLEASANT ROUTON (1881), and he died, then she married Henry CARDELL(1885). When he died, she married to George W. LEONARD (1897). Mary Hamby Cardell and Henry Cardell had the following children: William Thomas CARDELL (b. 1886) married Ella PEACOCK; Walter Frank Cardell, married Sara Jane McGEE; Myrtle Cardell married _____TRAMMEL; Charlie Cardell married and lived near Stamps, Ar. Mary Hamby Cardell and George Leonard had the following children: Eva Sue Leonard married Clarence GUINN; Bessie Leonard married Landy JAMISON; Dovie Leonard Clarence HARRISON; Gladys Leonard Robert Lafayette YOUNG; Della Leonard married Robert Lee KITEand second to Howard A. "Ted" WILSON; George Leonard, Jr. married Ethel SCOTT. THERE ARE TWO BOOKS WRITTEN WHICH INCLUDE THIS FAMILY. Email me for more information. "Trails Through Time" was written by A. I. Harrison, and "Peacock Feathers" written by Nancy Hough. Mary Hamby and William Pleasant Routon had no children that we know of. Mary Hamby-Routon-Cardell-Leonard's siblings were: Lilly married Mike ECKERT; Pearl married Harry REASONOVER; Bella, Tom, Walter Isom Hamby married Rose Kelly, Charlie,( was a Lawman) Stonewall Jackson "General" married Lou Dyer, and Henry who owned a saloon in Austin, Tx. These families resided around Hamlin, Roby, Rotan, Austin, Stamford and Peacock, Texas. There are some colorful stories about these men! I have a copy of a journal that grandma Mary wrote in her later years. WILLIAM THOMAS CARDELL married ELLA PEACOCK were my grandparents. The town of Peacock Texas was named after Ella Cardell's father and his brothers. John William Peacock and Brack and Morgan Peacock. The Stonewall county Historical society, the Western Division of the Peacock Family Association and the Texas Highway Commission has erected an Historic Marker in their honor, placed in the town square in the town of Peacock. There are also photographs of most of this family, including Henry Cardell. We have no photos of the Cliftons, Routon, Walden or earlier Hamby's. (we do have Priscilla).
