Pennellville, New York

Summer This is our house in Pennellville. We were north of Syracuse in a new development out in the country. There were several miles of forests and fields behind our lot. Our well water was cool and refreshing all year round. Most of our neighbors were really great. Halloween was always a special event because our neighborhood was quite isolated so we all met eachother as we took the kids out.Usually it snowed for Halloween, but once it rained instead--how miserable that was!

Backyard

And here's the back yard, where we used to enjoy birdwatching. Mostly we saw nuthatches, house finches, chickadees, American finches, downey, hairy, and red-bellied woodpeckers, and cowbirds.. One winter we had a lot of redpoles that would normally winter farther north (Canada). Occasionally we saw a pileated woodpecker and once we saw a large flock of wild turkeys.

Winter

Summer and Winter in Pennellville are dramatically different. Snow would get piled up 5 feet high down the edges of our driveway. Driving among snowdrifts was like driving through tunnels. But it was a Winter Wonderland! The snow was always clean, peaceful, and quiet. Nothing was cozier than spending the weekend at home, fully supplied, with no reason to go anywhere. And the kids loved playing in it: sledding, digging tunnels, exploring, ...

Fall and Winter views of our street

This was a beautiful street in all seasons, especially fall and winter. The fall colors of New York are brilliant and spectacular. Christmas lights would glow in freshly fallen snow on Winter nights. It was always a pleasant and welcoming sight to see them as I would pull into the neighborhood after driving home from work through the dark countryside.
