Robert Altman's M*A*S*H is a universally hailed masterpiece. Its honesty and humor were so dead-on that the Army at first wouldn't release it to the enlisted troops (they later relented). And yet while many have called it (quite rightly) a black comedy and a satire, what gives the movie its depth and bite is its sense of community, people bonding together through terrible times. And at the crux of all this is their bravery. As the song "Suicide Is Painless" implies, it would have been so easy to have given up. But in the end, it's a celebration of the human spirit, the nobility of dedication and the exploring of life.
