I have extensively researched the military numbers (CV numbers) used for valves and semiconductors. I believe I have collected the most complete list outside the military establishment. The list is available in its published form for £8 but individual equivalent enquiries can be made to me for no charge.

The CV (Common Valve) system was introduced during WW2 to harmonise the separate valve numbering systems in use by the 3 services - Army, Navy, Air Force. Conversion of the CV type numbers into commercially comparable types has always been a problem for the amateur and non-services professional. This listing is aimed at alleviating this problem and is the result of extensive research into many original source documents. It contains nearly 8000 equivalents and references to thermionic and semiconductor devices, many previously publically unpublished or erroneously assigned.

It will be noticed that gaps of various kinds are present in the listing. Most of these were never assigned by the authorities and some of the others do not have a commercial equivalent.

Many devices have more than one equivalent, particularly in the case of valves. In these cases the reference quoted is the one whose data is believed to be the most widely available.

The following conventions have been adopted:

1/ * Near-equivalent or similar characteristics, but see note 9

2/ de double-ended

3/ sel selected, but see note 9

4/ mod modified, but see note 9

5/ C.D. Crystal Diode

6/ N.D. Noise-generating diode

7/ l.n. low noise

8/ x2 Matched-pair

9/ References quoted may not be direct equivalents in every case but derivations from a commercial type, being developed or selected for higher performance or reliability.

The references given in the CV LIST have been checked extensively against the most reliable sources. The publishers cannot, however, accept any responsibility or liability for consequential loss resulting from its use.
