Plot Summary

Teacher and ex-marine Louanne Johnson accepts a full-time job at a Los Angeles high school without realising that the students in her class are highly intelligent, but with social problems. She either must give up or learn how to get the students' attention and help them learn

• Michelle Pfeiffer is charismatic, and she put up a good performance, despite the fact that she was doing the role while pregnant... commendable effort.
• Based on the true story of LouAnne Johnson, a former Marine who wrote a book about teaching gifted, but troubled, inner-city kids... hence close to reality, but many parts of the movie seemed too "seen-that/done-that".
• Fleetingly touches on the underfunding of schools and other administrative problems as well as the more compelling personal issues of teen pregnancy and violence.
