The film takes place in the surreal world of Verona, where gunfights and civil brawls are everyday life. Another part of the daily scene in Verona is the unending war between the Capulet and Montague families. They will do anything to tear each other apart and will do so to anyone who happens to get in their way. The only son of Ted Montague, Romeo, was born into the battle of the households, and holds no interest in fighting. Fulgencio Capulet himself also has only one child. A daughter named Juliet. Though she is never caught in the middle of the families' gunfights, she feels the sting of the violence at home. These two stumble across each other at a party and are immeadiately smitten. But, when they each find out who the other is, their sudden happiness seems to fall apart. But, they secretly decide to go against their families and married without their parents' knowledge. Though, their plot to bring the families together through their bond suddenly backfires. Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, comes after Romeo, not knowing that he is married to Juliet, and challenges him to a duel. When Romeo refuses to acept, Tybalt attacks him, until Romeo's friend, Mercutio steps in. He pulls Tybalt off Romeo and begins to beat him fiercely, and just when Mercutio was about o make his last strike Romeo jumps up and pulls him away. But, Tybalt jumps at the oppurtunity and spikes Mercutio in the side with a piece of glass. Mercutio soon dies and Tyblat runs. Driven with fury, Romeo goes after him and when he manages to catch up, shoots Tybalt . When the full realization of what has happened hits him, Romeo is forced to dun and hide in the confines of Friar Lawrence (the man who had married Romeo and Juliet).
