Jeremy's Bio Page

My name is Jeremy Bond Shepherd.
I live in San Francisco, California. I have lived in the Bay Area since 1990. I absolutely love it here. I am a real city boy type. Even on vacation, I like being near "the concrete jungle".

Work

I work for SBC Internet, in San Francisco. We go by the name of Pacific Bell Internet in California, Nevada Bell Internet in Nevada, and Southwestern Bell Internet in Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Arkansas. It's all the same company. However, we're not the same as "the phone company". The telephony division is owned by our parent company, SBC Communications, but we are otherwise completely unrelated.

I work in the Technology Management department, where I am responsible for manging various technical projects that improve our service or help us save on the cost of technical support.

Stuff I Like

I like the typical nerdy stuff. I'm very much into home theatre and I have a fairly decent system and a good movie collection. I especially love horror and fantasy films, musicals, and silents. I collect on Laserdisc, VHS, and DVD.

Computer stuff I'm into

I am a Macintosh user -- I like to use my computer for multimedia projects, such as making my own CDs, editing audio recordings, tracking my movie collection, and doing video editing. I also enjoy using the Internet. Sometimes it seems that I live on the Usenet.

I am also a Newton user. I take my MessagePad 2100 with me nearly everywhere I go. In my personal ife I use it for storing contact information (people and businesses), keeping track of little scraps of information (the Newton is great for this - I have almost no little scraps of paper or post-its cluttering up my life), keeping up with Usenet wherever I happen to be, and doing text entry and editing for uploading to my Mac word processor. In my professional life, I use my trusty Newton to track my dozens of to-dos and phone calls -- MoreInfo from Silverware is absolutely indispensible to me.

I think it's a real shame that the Newton never caught on and Apple had to discontinue it. However, it's not a device for everyone, and I can understand and support other peoples' decisions to use other portable platforms that meet their needs better. For me though, nothing could be better than the Newton with its big, bright screen, expandability, speed (162 MHZ!), and unbelievable amount of high-quality software.
