A subdivision of the Film Arts Society!

Women In Motion was started as a small group of women in Emerson College working to break the barriers that exist in the film industry today and inspire female film makers.  WIM was begun by Jane Shattuck to involve more women in the BFA Film program.  Founded as a film production group, WIM has evolved into a resource and support group for all women at Emerson.  Under the guidance of faculty advisors Bridget Murnane and Rob Sabal, membership consists mostly of film, acting and mass communication majors, but students from all majors are welcome.  Today our goals of familiarizing ourselves with the work of women and/or minorities in movies today remains the same.

In this vein we have attended the Women in the Director's Chair Film Festival in Chicago twice (providing members with an opportunity for networking, learning about the industry, getting exposed to the film community and what it is producing), we have screened films, and developed the Women In Motion Honorarium Award.

Each year we give an award to a woman (or women) who has increased the exposure of women and/or minorities in the film industry. With the help of Films From The Margin (another subdivision of F.A.S.) the recipient is brought for a ceremony and screening/workshop.  Past recipients have been Beth Harrington (the director of The Blinking Madonna and Other Miracles), Sarah Green (the producer of Passion Fish, The Secret of Roan Inish, and Oleanna among others) and Shana Hagan (DP of the Academy Award winning Breathing Lessons: The Life and Work of Mark O'Brien). This year's honorarium will be presented to Julia Schachter and Michele Ohayon, the producer and director of the Academy Award nominated Colors Straight Up.

As our group grows we can additionally return to the focus of making movies ourselves.  Our fourth film, The Art of Arson, is in post-production as well as our fifth, Cousins, and sixth, Forget Me Not.  Our goals will hopefully be expressed in the films we produce.
