Season 3

The Train

There is friction between Sully and Michaela as they clash over whether the railroad should come to Colorado Springs. As Sully starts to build the new homestead, Matthew feels his family is moving on without him.

Fathers and Sons

Brian wants to know more about girls so he goes round asking the men in town about them. Loren takes drastic measures to exert some excitement into his life by dying his hair and planning a trip to Bolivia.

The Cattle Drive

When Olive Davis, Loren’s sister dies, she leaves Matthew her cattle. With Matthew now the new trail boss, he must bring the cattle back to Colorado Springs safely but he clashes with Sully along the way on how best to do this.

The Library

When Michaela's mother sends her the books from her father's library, she opens the towns first library. But several of the townspeople don't like the some of the books and proceed to try and close the library down.

Halloween II

Brian befriends a disfigured man who's viewed by the townspeople as a "monster", and Michaela offers her surgical expertise to help him.

A Washington Affair

Michaela and the family, along with Sully and Cloud Dancing, travel to Washington D.C. to lobby Congress on behalf of the Cheyenne. While there, Sully's past catches up with him and he is imprisoned for desertion and sentenced to be shot to death. Michaela must figure out a way to save him.

Money Trouble

Sully can't afford to meet the expenses on the new house, but Michaela can and that's a problem, so he joins the Wild West Show in order to make some money. Meanwhile, Myra begins sleepwalking, which causes a problem for the town.

Thanksgiving

Michaela and Sully meet newlyweds Kid Cole and Sister Ruth in Denver and ask them to return home with them for Thanksgiving. But on the way back, their stagecoach is robbed in Dog Soldier territory.

Ladies' Night

Michaela detects a possibly cancerous lump in Dorothy's breast, but Dorothy resists Michaela's advice to have it treated. Dorothy insists that the decision whether to have breast cancer surgery is hers, not Michaela's. Colleen receives some trouble from some boys over her figure.

A First Christmas

A Jewish immigrant family arrives in town at Christmas time, bringing their own seasonal traditions and competition for Loren's dry-goods business.

The Indian Agent

Sully is sworn in as an Indian Agent, but his sincere efforts on behalf of the Cheyenne are undercut by bureaucratic corruption that leaves the tribe without food or supplies.

The End of the World

A newspaper's report of a comet's imminent collision with Earth causes hysteria in the town over the possible end of the world.

Pike's Peace

Michaela finds a kindred spirit in a strong willed Bostonian who's determined to scale Pike's Peak - alone. Meanwhile, Grace acts bitterly toward Myra as Myra's due date approaches.

Cooper Vs. Quinn

Michaela and Sully decide to initiate a formal adoption of Colleen and Brian, but the kids' father, Ethan Cooper, and his young new wife challenge them for custody when Ethan finds out his wife cannot bare children, which he needs to get to her inheritance.

What Is Love?

Dorothy wants to stage Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" for Valentine's Day. Meanwhile, Michaela and Sully plan to celebrate the holiday together until Sully's job as an Indian Agent interferes. Brian observes the townsfolk for his essay ‘What Is Love?’

The Things My Father Never Gave Me

In the most important job of his life, Robert E. is hired to repair a steam engine to keep the construction of the railroad on track.

Baby Outlaws

An ornery young woman is wounded while trying to rob the saloon, and Michaela offers to help her recuperate at the homestead. But Michaela's never seen the likes of Belle Starr before.

Bone Of Contention

A greedy palaeontologist finds an excavation site that could yield a wealth of dinosaur fossils, but it's also a sacred Cheyenne burial ground.

Permanence of Change

While filling in as a substitute teacher, Michaela becomes aware that a new girl in school is being neglected and abused at home. Meanwhile, townsfolk are riled when Michaela introduces the theory of evolution to the children.

Washita

With starvation spreading through the Cheyenne nation, raids on settlers increase as renegade Cheyenne Dog Soldiers scavenge for food. Chief Black Kettle reluctantly begins to lead his tribe to Fort Cobb in Indian Territory, where sanctuary and provisions are promised. Michaela and Sully are shocked to learn that General Custer and his cavalry troops have been ordered to pursue the peaceful tribe into Indian Territory. They rush across country to warn them, but arrive too late to prevent the tragic bloodshed that results.

Sully's Recovery

While on his way to resign as Indian Agent after the U.S. Cavalry's massacre of the Cheyenne, Sully discovers Loren badly injured in the wilderness and must battle his own spiritual despair in order to save him. Meanwhile, Michaela is alarmed about Brian who is consumed with his efforts to build a flying machine. The entire town becomes caught up in the boy's attempt to put on wings, but Michaela fears the venture might be both physically and emotionally dangerous.

Ready or Not

Michaela and Sully begin to have second thoughts about their impending marriage as they look back on the rocky road they have travelled since falling in love. While meeting with Rev. Johnson for some pre-wedding counselling, they reflect on the amusing, touching and often dangerous events that have marked their relationship and inspired their decision to become man and wife, despite the great differences in their backgrounds.

For Better or Worse

Michaela and Sully are ready to tie the knot, but not before they tie up some loose ends. Michaela must mend frayed relationships with her mother and troubled sister, who arrive with another of Michaela's sisters on the towns first train. Sully faces an imperilled bond with his best man, Cloud Dancing, who's on the run from General Custer. And tension builds between the bride and groom over Sully's refusal to wear a wedding ring and Michaela's decision to keep her name.
