The Black Knight

“This is depressing...” Nick whined. He pressed furiously on the playstation controller. “What is?” Brian asked. He leaned back against the chair and stared at the screen absentmindedly. “We finally get a vacation and I’m at home playing video games!” Nick exclaimed. Brian’s answer was quick and simple. “So turn it off already!” Nick ignored his friend and concentrated on the racing game, while quietly muttering to himself about how he could have been out with the other guys, clubbing. Brian overheard his mindless ramblings and laughed. “Gee Nick, you are really something.” He got up from the couch and ambled over to the TV set and quickly shut off the game system. Nick’s eyes glared daggers at the back of Brian’s head and he could feel it as sharp as knives. “Sorry, but you wanted to do something else,” he explained patiently.

It was a quiet Friday evening and Brian had decided to stay at Nick’s house for the night. The house was newly purchased and had a breathtaking view of the ocean. The moonlight shone through the large windows of the living room, making the rest of the dark house gleam with a shimmering silver aura. Brian definitely didn’t want to watch Nick mutter at his television all night; he had endured it all day already. He wandered back to the couch to sit and watched Nick put away the system into the glass cabinet; moving over to give him some sitting space. “So now what?” he asked. Nick shrugged and picked up the remote control, changing the television to “TV” mode. He began flipping listlessly through the cable network, pausing momentarily to see if anything was worth watching.

“Hey, wait, stop!” Brian cried out. Nick flipped back two channels, wondering what in the world Brian was shouting about. It was a movie, an old one obviously. Just looking at the costumes and set, you could tell that it was about the medieval era. Knights galloped audaciously on gleaming white horses, swishing long and shining swords back and forth. “You like this stuff?” Nick asked incredulously. Brian shrugged. “Hey, I’m bored. This is better than watching you race a computer jet ski,” he laughed. Nick pursed his lips and leaned back into the couch, narrowing his eyes at the screen. “It’s really boring,” he announced suddenly. Brian hushed him down. The scene showing was one in the forest. I maiden- a beautiful one at that- was running through the forest, looking back every few minutes. Branches and trees swirled around her dress as she clamored through roots and grass. “Brian, you’re retarded. You do know that, right?”

Brian felt like exploding. Either that, or strangling Nick to death. They had known each other for nearly five years already, and were close friends. However, there were still times that Brian felt like seriously yelling at Nick. “Okay Nick, you don’t want to watch, then go. Go to sleep! Do whatever! But, I’m watching this!” Brian remained firm and his eyes shot daggers at Nick. Nick’s attention was suddenly diverted to the screen. “Wow, she’s hot!” Brian turned to the screen, noticing first the long dark hair and blue eyes. ‘What an interesting combination,’ he thought to himself. Nick was right- her eyes were large and innocent as her posture was straight and graceful. She wasn’t only beautiful; she was gorgeous. “Okay, so maybe this movie isn’t that boring,” Nick teased. Brian tossed a small throw pillow in his friend’s direction and continued to watch the movie. “Do you think they have a shower scene?” Nick asked innocently with a glint in his eyes. Brian cracked a smile and shook his head. “Talk about a one track mind,” he laughed. “Yeah, yeah,” Nick replied. He leaned against the armrest of the couch and rested his head on his elbow. So maybe the movie wasn’t really that bad; he could see that it was beginning to take some form of a plot.

The movie ended long into the night and by the time it ended, both men were asleep on the couch. Nick was snoring softly and hardly noticed that he had left a large window unlocked. The curtains fluttered softly with the warm, salty ocean breeze and they were both too asleep to notice a figure clad in black climb through the window softly. Neither heard the soft sound of footsteps as the figure came closer to the couch where they were sleeping. Nor did they see the figure pull out something black and shiny from a pocket and pull back the catch with a click. All Nick remembered was a loud bang that nearly deafened his ears, and the sound of his own bloodcurdling scream filling the empty house as he saw warm gushing blood flow all around him.
