Life Has Good Times - And Bad

"Nicole, honey. Would you please pass me those plates next to you?" Mom asked. "Nicole? NICOLE!" I looked up. "Oh, what did you say?" I didn't know what was going on. Neither did my mom. "What on earth are you doing?" she looked shocked. I looked down. I guess I sort of got why she was so surprised. I was reading a book. Not only reading, but actually stuck to it, too. I decided to answer my mom before she fainted. "What does it look like I'm doing? I'm reading," I replied with a smirk. My mom suddenly smiled. I'm not the most diligent student in the world, so she was proud that I was reading when I didn't have to. But I was afraid she would've gotten really mad if she saw what I was reading, so I waved to her and ran out of the kitchen as fast as I could.

I'm sorry. Let me introduce myself. I am Nicole Angel Cartland, but it's Nikki for short which all my friends call me. I'm 17 years old and I go to Lockwood High school, and I live in Bloomfield, Iowa, which is great since I have such a big family. Not that big, but that's what I hear all the time at school. I have 3 sisters, Kaitlyn; 9, Sarah; 7, Maggie; 5, and 2 brothers, Tim is 23 and Dennis is 19. My parents are Joshua and Jenn who are both in their late 40's. To make the family more hectic, we have 2 dogs, 3 cats, 2 horses, 1 cow, 5 pigs, and 7 sheep. Whew. I guess you probably guessed by now, we live on a farm. Now don't think we're old country people, because we're not even close. We were all born in a city somewhere, but my parents thought the city wasn't a good place to raise children, so when I was 11, we moved here.

Back to the present. I flopped onto my bed in my very own room. Just a few weeks ago, for my birthday, we built a room for me! I just couldn't stand living with 3 annoying (but cute) sisters who are so nosy I just can't help screaming at them. Besides, they didn't like living with me either since my side of the room was covered with posters of celebrities.

I laid on my stomach and opened the book. Why I was afraid of my mom looking at the book so much is because it wasn't a classic or a novel which she always hoped. It was the Backstreet Boys official book. I bought it the day before when me and my friends were at the mall. No one in my family knew about it. I'm totally obsessed with the Backstreet Boys, you just wouldn't believe it. I have everything from pictures, to key chains of them.

I was at a very good part in the book. It showed baby pictures of all of them, and I sighed. I always wished to meet them. I have once, kind of. I went to the concert when I was with my grandparents in New York. And the good part was (get this), I bumped right into them on my way there! I went the wrong way, and no other fan knew about that place, but that's where the boys like, freshen up. No, it's not backstage, but somewhere else back there. And I bumped right into Nick! I almost fainted. He smiled and said sorry and went back. Ah, those were the good days.

Sorry, I keep getting off the subject. Their baby pics looked so cute! Howie looked exactly like he does today! Except his teeth and hair, I mean. I was there on my back (I guess I turned over), and I heard a knocking. I ignored it, not knowing someone was at the door.

"Nikki?" my big brother Tim called. I was startled. I tried to hide the book under my pillow, but he came in a saw before I could and I knew it was too late. I sighed.

"Hi Tim. I bet you're wondering what's behind my back, but you have to swear not to tell anyone!" I pointed my finger at him with a stern look in my eye. He shrugged his shoulders and sat down on the edge of my bed. I scooted back a little to get him out of the reach of my book.

"Sure. But if it's that bad, you know I have to tell," he said with a comforting smile. Unlike Dennis, Tim actually cared about me, and he's mature. It might be because he's the oldest of the family and it was his duty, but I guess he was just like my mom. He wouldn't tell on me because it was a book, I knew it. I smiled at him and pulled out my arm.

"Here, look at this," I said. He took the book and flipped through it after staring at the cover of the book for a few seconds. He looked at me strangely.

"Why are you so afraid I'd tell anyone because of this?" He looked disgusted. He gently threw the book in front of me and got up and walked towards the door. "I just don't get girls," I heard him mumble. "Spending precious money on these....things." I giggled. I waved to him as he closed the door behind him.
