One Life To Live
Storyline Histories

1978

Bored by her marriage to hard-working Larry Wolek, Karen began secretly seeing several different men around town. At first, Karen's suitors gave her expensive gifts, but she soon discovered that the men expected some "gift" from Karen in return. She became a prostitute. That was when Marco Dane (Gerald Anthony) arrived in town. Marco was Karen's former lover; he was also a professional pimp and pornographer. After his arrival, it was not long before he discovered Karen's sexual moonlightings. He coerced her into becoming one of his prostitutes. Although she at first tried to refuse, she later accepted reluctantly. Though Karen desperately wanted out, her pimp, Marco Dane, forced her to remain in "the life," and she prayed that her upstanding husband would not discover her secret.

Marco Dane then opened what he claimed was a modeling agency. Seeking young and nubile "models," Marco offered a contract to Viki Riley's sweet and innocent goddaughter, Tina Clayton (Andrea Evans). Marco took Tina's photos, then doctored the images to make it seem as though the teenager had posed in the nude. Marco threatened to make the photos public unless Viki gave in to his blackmail attempts.

Samantha Vernon chased after Tony, who was nearly twice as old as she was. After telling her there could never be anything more than friendship between them, she drove off recklessly with Pamela, her father's fiancee. They crashed. Pamela died and Samantha survived with horrible facial scars. Tony realized how much he cared for her and vowed never to leave her.

Carla found herself falling in love with brilliant neurosurgeon Dr. Jack Scott (Arthur Burghardt) even though she was still married to Ed. Though she tried to remain true to her marriage, Carla could eventually deny her feelings for Jack no longer and asked Ed for a divorce.

1979

Fed up with Marco's blackmailing attempts, Viki went to his studio to tell him off, but was shocked to discover his dead body. She was even more shocked to be indicted for Marco's murder and put through a long, grueling trial. During that time, Viki discovered Karen's awful secret and begged her to tell Larry the truth. But Karen refused; she couldn't bear to hurt her husband and begged Viki to keep her prostitution a secret.

When Viki stood trial for the murder, an anguished Karen took the stand and, under the fire of district attorney Herb Callison (Anthony Call), she revealed the sordid truth of her life as a hooker. It was then that the true killer was revealed. Marco had been murdered by a man named Talbot Huddleston (one of Karen's johns). One day, Talbot was speeding away from Marco's studio with Karen beside him. In his haste to get to their "appointment," he accidentally hit and killed Pat Kendall's son Brian. He sped off without reporting the accident. Marco, discovering the crime, blackmailed Talbot for it - eventually Talbot killed him off. (Years later it would be revealed that Marco's identical brother Mario was the actual victim).

Pat Kendall felt responsible for her son Brian's death; on the day of the accident, he'd learned that Tony, not Paul Kendall, was his father. It was then that he'd run into the street and been hit by Talbot Huddleston. She came out of her shell, however, when enemies of Paul Kendall shot him and she was forced to rush him to the hospital. The terrorists took Jenny and Joe hostage, but they were later rescued by police captain Ed Hall. Pat and Paul's reconciliation didn't last long, however, and they were shortly divorced.

Joe Riley put his life in order when he learned that he was dying of a brain tumor. Joe hired a hand-picked successor, Clint Buchanan (Clint Ritchie), to become editor of the BANNER when he died, leaving his pregnant wife to mourn his passing. In time, Clint's father, Asa (Phil Carey), moved his business interests from Texas to Llanview.

Viki gave birth to Joe's son Joey, shortly after his death.

Jack Scott and Carla Gray Hall were married.

Edwina tried to break up Richard and Becky's romance. She found out Becky was still married to hillbilly, Luke. Luke came to town, assaulted Richard, who underwent brain surgery but survived. Luke, who was jailed, escaped, and followed Richard and Becky to a mountain cabin. Again, police came to the rescue, and Lt. Ed Hall was promoted to captain. Richard and Becky married, despite the opposition of Richard's snobbish mother, Gwendolyn.

1980

Bo began carrying on with his father Asa's girlfriend, cheerleader Mimi King (Kristen Meadows). He felt sorry for her because of the way Asa was treating her (not to mention the fact that Asa was currently wooing the very young Samantha Vernon! When Asa learned of Bo and Mimi's relationship, he told Bo he could have her!

Llanview was shocked to learn that Marco Dane had not died! Talbot had actually killed his twin brother Mario Corelli and Marco had returned to town, pretending to be his dead brother. Karen learned of his scheme and kept his secret.

Jenny became pregnant with Brad's child. But the pregnancy was difficult and she was forced to be confined in the hospital. In the meantime, Brad was on the prowl for other women. When Karen rejected his advances, he raped her. Later, Karen told the story to Marco, who then beat Brad up. When Larry found out, he also gave him a beating. When Jenny learned of Brad's crime she told them they were through and went into childbirth. But the baby was weak and died. When Karen and Marco witnessed the death of Jenny's baby, they knew that the devastating tragedy would destroy her. To save her the anguish, Karen and Marco sneaked into the nursery and switched Jenny's dead baby with the healthy baby girl delivered by hooker Katrina Karr (Nancy Snyder). The crime went undetected, and Katrina was told that her child had died. Jenny unknowingly raised Katrina's baby girl as her own flesh and blood. When the scam was exposed years later, a heartbroken Jenny gave the child back to her rightful mother.

Pat Ashley left for Paris to cover the fashion shows. Bo Buchanan (Robert S. Woods) was infatuated with her, and trailed Pat there, determined to win her love. There, the couple met the mysterious Nicole Bernard (Taina Elg). When Bo's father Asa learned of their meeting, he ordered her kidnapped and brought to Llanview, where she was held against her will. In actuality, Nicole was none other than Olympia Buchanan, mother of Clint and Bo, former wife of Asa, and a woman who'd had an affair with both Asa's employee Chuck and a man named Yancy Ralston. Olympia had accidentally killed Yancy in an argument over her pregnancy. (Though the child, Bo, was actually Asa's son.)

While holding his first wife prisoner, Asa made a romantic play for young Samantha Vernon. In his bid to woo her, Asa held a spectacular birthday party for her at his new Southhampton Mansion. Samantha married Asa, unaware that his first wife, Olympia, was being held captive in a nearby mansion. After the wedding, Asa and Sam threw a masquerade party to celebrate. Olympia, now mentally unstable, escaped and prepared to kill Sam. Finding her at the party, she attempted to push the bride over a balcony, but fell to her own death instead. Bo, grief-stricken and falsely informed that Yancy Ralston was his real father, broke up with Pat and decided to get revenge on Asa by changing his last name to Ralston.

Despite the fact that Larry was willing to forgive Karen for her prostitution, she felt their problems were insurmountable and they separated.

Melinda Cramer (Jane Badler) returned to town, released after several years in a mental hospital. She was Dorian's chief rival for the affections of Dr. Peter Janssen. Dorian tried to get Melinda sent back to the asylum, but later felt guilty and stood by as Melinda and Peter married. She began her own affair with Paul Kendall. Melinda remained insecure, however. When a world-famous piano teacher turned her down as a pupil, she couldn't bear to let anyone know she'd failed.

1981

Ex-convict Tom Clarkson came to town pretending to be Tina's long-lost father Ted Clayton. He won both Tina and Viki's trust and schemed to get his hands on Tina's inheritance. But he began to feel bad about his plan and helped rescue Tina when she was kidnapped and held for ransom.

The real Ted Clayton was involved in a counterfeit ring, unbeknownst to Tina and Viki. Realizing that Viki could be an excellent financial asset, he schemed to marry her by giving Viki drugs that made her forget about Clint and turn to him instead. Both Clint and Vinnie Wolek learned of his crime; Ted later killed Vinnie and made it look like a heart attack. Clint eventually apprehended Ted.

Teenager Cassie Reynolds (Cusi Cram) arrived in Llanview to live with her mother Dorian, who later married Herb Callison after a failed romance with Paul Kendall.

After the Ted Clayton catastrophe, Viki still refused to accept Clint's offer to date. Believing that seeing Viki on only a professional basis was too painful, Clint resigned from the BANNER newspaper and went to work for the rival CHRONICLE, where he became romantically involved with reporter Edwina Lewis (Margaret Klenck). Upset over Clint's departure and affair with Edwina, Viki discovered that her feelings for Clint were deeper than she had realized. Finally, Viki dropped her guard and allowed herself to follow her heart and fall in love with Clint.

Jenny was still determined to end her marriage to Brad, and lived relatively happily with her newborn child, unaware that it was actually Kat's. In time, she fell in love with Peter Janssen.

The strain of pretending to be his dead brother Mario was too much for Marco to handle and he developed a dual-personality disorder. When he was able to confess to the world who he was, his mental balance was restored and he fell in love with Edwina, who was reeling from Clint's love for Viki.

Bo got to know his new "family" - the Ralstons, which included Euphemia, Delila and Drew. However, he began having feelings for his "cousin" Delila (Shelly Burch).

1982

Once a fine neurosurgeon, the demented Dr. Ivan Kipling (Jack Betts) returned to Llanview with an outlandish plan to win Karen Wolek's love. The mad doctor planted a mind-altering device inside the brain of Larry, Karen's ex-husband who was still in love with her. Kipling then instructed Larry to do his bidding for him. Larry lured Karen to Kipling, who whisked her away to his South American jungle hideaway. Larry regained his wits, and after the implant was removed, he rushed to the jungle and rescued Karen from the mad doctor.

Peter Janssen was killed in a car accident. Following his death, the truth came out about her daughter Mary - that she was actually Kat's child. Reluctantly, she returned the baby to its rightful mother.

Viki went to jail for refusing to reveal her source in the baby switching case involving Jenny Vernon and Katrina Karr. While in prison, Viki and Clint decided to marry at Llanfair, which they did after evicting Dorian, who had been living in the mansion with her new husband, Herb. As the widow of Viki's father, Victor Lord, Dorian had been rightfully living at Llanfair. However, the house was supposed to revert to Viki upon Dorian's remarriage. When Dorian refused to leave, Clint carried her out!

Bo's relationship with Asa became flammable when he learned that Asa was actually his true father. Because Bo and Delila were cousins and could not become romantically involved, Delila had become involved with Asa, and later married him. Asa wanted Delila all to himself, and didn't tell Bo that he was actually a Buchanan. By the time Bo learned the truth, it was too late. On the rebound, Bo slept with Becky Lee Abbott, who became pregnant.

Asa embarked on a fishing trip with Brad, but the yacht they were on exploded. Both survived, but Asa pretended he was dead and used Brad to report on Bo and Delila's whereabouts. When Asa returned and Delila learned of his scheme, she accused him of manipulating her, divorced him and joyfully married Bo at long last. Becky Lee, hurt and upset, agreed to marry Drew Ralston (Matt Ashford).

Marco turned movie director, with Asa's money. The film, Blood Moon was based on a real-life murder mystery and it soon became apparent that someone was sabotaging the movie, in an attempt to keep it from being completed. Among the chief suspects were Edwina Lewis and Gary Corelli (Jeff Fahey), Marco's kid brother, who'd never forgiven him for Mario's death. The person behind the plot turned out to be Kyle Dickenson, the son of the real-life murderer. In the end, Asa withdrew his financial support from the film.

Rafe Garretson (Ken Meeker), a distant cousin of the Buchanans, fell in love with Asa's ex-wife Samantha Vernon and they shortly married.

Herb adopted Dorian's teenage daughter Cassie.

1983

Larry was devastated when Karen ran off to Canada with Steve Piermont (Robert Desiderio). On the rebound, Larry and Jenny came close to an affair, but Jenny's feelings for Brad resurfaced. Brad planned to open a new hotel, the Vernon Inn, but when contractors used substandard materials the whole idea almost went up in smoke. When he learned that Kat wanted to go to Florida, he ruined her chances. Jenny learned the truth and broke off their second engagement.

Drew and Becky Lee prepared to be married. On their wedding day, however, he was gunned down in a robbery. Asa, realizing the child she was carrying was his grandson, convinced Becky Lee to marry him. It was a way of giving her child the Buchanan name and of getting revenge on Bo. Meanwhile, Delila and Bo married. Bo didn't know that Becky Lee's child was his, and believed it to be that of the late Drew Ralston. Fearing that she could lose Bo again, Delila faked a pregnancy and kept the news of Bo's fatherhood a secret. When Becky nearly died, she told Bo the truth: he was her baby's father. Bo discovered that Delila knew about Becky's pregnancy in advance, and he ended their marriage.

Tony Lord returned to Llanview briefly and married Pat Ashley, his first true love, at long last. The two happily left Llanview together. Sadly, Tony was to die shortly thereafter in Beirut.

Echo di Savoy (Kim Zimmer) and Giles Morgan (Robert Gentry) came to Llanview. Unbeknownst to anyone, they were actually brother and sister and were set on ruining Clint. Clint had had an affair with their mother Giselle years ago and they blamed him for her murder. Echo trapped Clint into a night of passion and let Viki find out about it. During a bitter fight with Clint on a bridge, Echo plunged into the water in an apparent suicide. However, Dorian told the police that clint had pushed Echo. At the trial Echo recalled the truth and admitted she jumped. It was also revealed that her father, and not Clint, had been responsible for Giselle's death.

Rafe Garretson's storybook marriage to Samantha Buchanan came to a horribly tragic end when Samantha was attacked by a thug and left to drown in a hot tub at the Llanview Health Club. When Samantha fell into a coma, Rafe's agonizing decision whether or not to pull the plug on his brain-dead wife was complicated by the discovery that she was pregnant! In an astonishing medical procedure, the embryo was transferred from Samantha to her dear friend, Delila. Nine months later, with Rafe assisting in the delivery room, Delila miraculously gave birth to a baby girl, Sammi.

Renowned pianist and conductor David Renaldi arrived in Llanview to become conductor of the Llanview Philharmonic Orchestra. Though most of Llanview welcomed Renaldi's arrival, Dorian Lord Callison was anything but pleased. She knew him as David Reynolds, the man with whom she was romantically involved in college and with whom she had a child (Cassie). Dorian harbored bitter feelings toward David because of the way the relationship ended. She did her best to get him removed as symphony conductor in the hope that he would then leave town. She was unsuccessful however and David's position as conductor ultimately was affirmed by the symphony Board of Directors.

David met Cassie who was in awe of the famous maestro. A friendship developed and he was somewhat saddened realizing the years he had lost and that he was not a part of her life. He also met Jenny Janssen, and they became friends. Jenny informed David that she was re-marrying Brad Vernon and taking a leave of absence from the hospital to help him run the Vernon Inn, a new establishment to open soon. David expressed his feelings about her decision, saying she could not be fulfilled devoting her life to the Vernon Inn instead of the children who needed her at the hospital. Brad was uncomfortable with Jenny's interest in David, but she assured him that they were just friends.

Jenny's plans to re-marry Brad were halted when she learned of some of his most recent manipulations. She vowed that it was over for good this time and found a sympathetic ear in David. They began to date and David soon entrusted her with information about his past including his involvement in human rights work internationally.

Herb, having become suspicious of Dorian's relationship with David, began to investigate. His suspicions led him to Dorian's sister Melinda who confirmed that David Renaldi was in fact David Reynolds. David and Herb had words about his past relationship with Dorian and Herb's belief that she was still in love with him. David assured him that there had been nothing going on between them since he returned and there never would be. They agreed not to tell Cassie the truth until they felt she was ready to hear it.

Dorian saw that Jenny and David were becoming close. Motivated both by underlying feelings she still had for him and resentment of how their relationship ended, she went to Jenny and told her about their past. She informed her that their relationship began in college, that David was Cassie's father and that he took Cassie and left Dorian without word, and she did not know for years where her daughter was. David arrived at Jenny's house and realized something was not right. Dorian left and he pressed Jenny to find out what was wrong. She confronted him about not telling the truth about his relationship with Dorian. David provided his view of the story. He explained that he left Dorian because she expected his musical career to take a back seat to her medical one. He took on most of the care of Cassie and felt it was best that Cassie go with him. Cassie was taken to David's mother's home. He planned to return for her but as his musical career took off it became more difficult. Later, when he became involved in human rights work, he stayed away out of fear for her safety.

Jenny was mysteriously attacked at the hospital. Her assailant, Hawk, was concerned that she might recognize him from his evil doings when they were both in the city of San Carlos. She was rescued and hospitalized. The assailant (and a number of other people) were in search of a quarter billion dollars worth of jewels which had been stolen from the government of San Carlos. As it turned out, the jewels were stashed in a piano and dislodged when a special classical piece was played. David discovered this and after dislodging them replaced them for safe keeping. David told Bo he knew where the jewels were and would recover them the next day. Hawk overheard this and arranged to kidnap Jenny from the hospital. He later informed David that he would exchange Jenny for the jewels. Unfortunately, Simon Warfield, the son of the President of San Carlos, knew where the jewels were as well, having observed David dislodging them from the piano. He got the music that needed to be played to get at the jewels and was able to retrieve them. This began a tense process of keeping Hawk from harming Jenny until Simon was found and the jewels could be returned.

Desperate to find Simon before Hawk hurt Jenny, David went to Cassie, who was now involved with Simon, and insisted on knowing where he was (something she didn't know at the time). She asked what gave him the right to demand information from her and he blurted out that he had the right because he was her father. He apologized for the way she learned this news but Jenny's life was at stake. Cassie eventually found Simon, realized he had the jewels, and convinced him to return them. Jenny was rescued from Hawk, but not before some interference from Brad almost ruined things. Brad, who did not like the idea of Jenny with David, still had feelings for her and hoped to regain lost ground. Once Jenny was back home safely, David proposed, she accepted and they began planning their wedding. He welcomed her home with a special song he had written for her called Winter Enchantment. Jenny tried to help him repair his relationship with Cassie who had been angry with him, her mother and Herb since finding out the truth about David being her father.

1984

After divorcing Delila and renouncing his father Asa, Bo started a new life as "Bill Brady." He moved in with the working class O'Neill family.

Larry fell madly in love with ex-mob queen Laurel Chapin, who reminded him of his late wife Meredith. Trouble was soon in store, however, in the form of crazy Tracy James, a nurse and a homicidal psycopath. Tracy took an immediate interest in Larry and vowed to win him over, enlisting the help of a dangerous cohort named Stick.

Brad and Dorian decided to join forces to break David and Jenny up. They investigated his past and found the perfect answer. David and Jenny's wedding day arrived and when the judge said "does anyone know a reason why these two should not be married," a woman named Liat jumped to her feet and declared that David was already married to her. Chaos ensued. David obviously knew her but claimed she was lying. Jenny was devastated. David explained to Jenny that he was briefly married to Liat...a political marriage designed to get her out of her country where her family had been marked for death. It was all part of his human rights work. The marriage was annulled; he had the papers to prove it. He saved Liat's life by doing this and couldn't understand why she would repay him by hurting him this way. David rushed home to find the annulment papers but discovered that they were never signed and he was, in fact, still legally married to Liat. Jenny ultimately understood the situation and David dedicated himself to finding Liat (who had now disappeared) in order to get legally divorced. David was sure Brad was behind this and there was speculation by some that Dorian had a hand in it as well.

David headed over to Dorian's house to confront her about the wedding and arrived to find her unconscious at the foot of the stairs. He rushed her to the hospital. Cassie accused him of being responsible for Dorian's injury. David was hurt and upset that Cassie would believe this and was anxious for Dorian to regain consciousness to set the record straight. Dorian regained consciousness and saw David and Jenny through the window embracing. She couldn't believe that the wedding fiasco didn't break them up. Dorian asked to see Jenny privately and said that David pushed her down the stairs. She described him as a dangerous and violent man. She said she would not turn him over to the authorities if Jenny ended their relationship. Jenny, not able to bear the thought of what prison would do to David, eventually agreed. Dorian, in turn, agreed to tell the world that her fall was an accident.

David was mystified when Jenny broke off their relationship. A former nun, she returned to the convent to think and decide what she wanted to do with her life, including possibly rejoining the order. She ultimately decided against that and to remain in Llanview. While at the convent, Jenny found out that Brad was indeed behind the appearance of Liat at the wedding. Brad visited her at the convent and showed the visible signs of his "discussion" with David about his bringing Liat to town.

During this time, Dorian (now paralyzed from the fall) had begun to get chummy with David who never learned of her involvement in the Liat matter. Dorian asked him if he would give her piano lessons and he agreed out of sympathy for her situation.

Herb arrived with news for David that his divorce from Liat was now final and official. David saw Jenny at the hospital and informed her about the divorce and that he was free. Jenny let him know that it made no difference as far as the two of them were concerned.

Jenny started wondering why Dorian was taking piano lessons from someone whom she feared and said hurt her. She concluded that something was just not right. She decided to take control of her life. She showed up at David's door and said she couldn't stand to be away from him anymore, and they spent the night together. The next morning David (still clueless about what was going on) couldn't quite believe Jenny was back in his arms. She insisted that no-one must know that they were back together. He didn't understand why but agreed when she said that's the way it had to be or she couldn't come back.

As Dorian was leaving David's house one day after her piano lesson, she saw the curtain move in a room upstairs and suspected that Jenny may be back with David. She later reminded Jenny of their deal. One night Dorian took the keys to David's house which she got from Simon. She climbed the stairs and heard the two of them. She returned home angry that Jenny and David were back together. Jenny later realized Dorian was in the house. Jenny, fed up with Dorian's antics, proposed marriage to David who quickly accepted. She later went to Dorian and told her she and David were back together. She said she believed him about what happened that day and it was her word against his.

Dorian later asked to see Jenny and produced an "eyewitness" to the fall...Larry's love interest Laurel. She substantiated Dorian's story. Jenny was sure it was a lie. As Laurel was trying to get away from Jenny, who was confronting her about her story, she ran into the street and was hit by a car. At the hospital Laurel confessed to David and Jenny that she lied. She was there when Dorian fell; they were arguing. It was an accident but Dorian threatened to turn her over to the police if she didn't go along. David was stunned and furious with Dorian, but she convinced him to do nothing for the sake of Cassie.

David and Jenny planned a secret wedding. David went to Dorian's house and, though tempted to confront her, didn't because of his promise to Jenny. He secretly asked Cassie to be at a certain place at a certain time and tell no-one. Cassie arrived at the wedding location and she and Larry witnessed David and Jenny marry.

When a criminal held a gun on Herb at his home, Dorian rose to her feet and helped save Herb...much to his surprise and her feigned surprise. At Cassie's graduation party Dorian showed those in attendance that she could walk again. Cassie was thrilled.

1985

Things settled into a fairly normal routine in the Renaldi household when Jenny asked David how he would feel about providing a temporary home for a 16 year old, Michelle, whom the police planned to detain if no other arrangements could be found. She was the daughter of the man who held the gun on Herb. David agreed, primarily because Jenny wanted it so much. In a shootout, Michelle's father was killed by Captain Ed Hall. Ed claimed self defense. Michelle, a witness, claimed it wasn't. The gun Ed said was aimed at him when he fired was no where to be found...substantiating Michelle's claim that it wasn't self-defense. As it turned out, Michelle took the gun and hid it at the Renaldi house.

All attention focused on Michelle and the grand jury hearing concerning Ed and the shooting. David was convinced Michelle was lying. Jenny just wanted to protect her from the authorities whom she felt were hounding her. All of the Michelle business put a strain on the Renaldi marriage. Grand jury time arrived; Michelle fled. Jenny found her in a warehouse and convinced her to tell the truth about what happened. Ed was absolved of any wrongdoing in the shooting.

Following her court appearance David agreed to drive Michelle home. Reflecting on all she had been through, he suggested some counseling might be in order to help her deal with it all. Michelle reacted badly to the suggestion believing that he just didn't like her and thought she was a bad person. She ran from the car into the street and was hit. A hospital vigil ensued. Jenny blamed David and he was worried... not only about Michelle but also whether Jenny would ever be able to forgive him if Michelle died. Fortunately, Michelle recovered.

Cassie fell in love with Rob Coronal, son of mob kingpin Alex Crown and Laurel Chapin.

At Llanfair, Tina accidentally discovered Victor Lord's secret room, which contained a shocking letter to Viki in which Victor stated that he was Tina's father. When Tina confronted Viki with the letter, she refused to accept the stunning news. Totally traumatized, Viki went into her closet, donned a red wig, and headed to the Backstreet Bar where she introduced herself as Niki! Her schizophrenic persona had returned...

Much-married millionaire Asa Buchanan was leading two distinctly different lives. No one in Llanview had an inkling that Asa was keeping a secret wife on the remote island of Malakeva. Posing as a sea captain named Jeb, Asa married the innocent Pamela Stewart. When Pamela discovered Asa's charade, she feigned a fatal illness to trick Asa into marrying her for real!

One day David got a mysterious call to come to New York. He told Jenny he had to go away for a few days as he needed to talk with his new agent who had great things planned for him that would enable him to do more concerts. Jenny said she loved New York, and got time off from the hospital so she could go with him. He tried to convince her that he would be too busy to spend time with her. Jenny didn't care and David made the best of the situation by pretending to be glad she was going along, when in reality he was worried. When his contact heard Jenny was coming along, she was very annoyed and told David to make certain she didn't come with him.

Jenny and David arrived in New York. He proceeded to the hotel room of Aida York, the reigning soprano opera diva, and was clearly not happy to be there. Reference was made to an assignment for him. She made it clear she was the person in charge. They discussed matters and before he left asked for his passport. A picture of David was taken with him wearing some nerdy eyeglasses. Jenny and David saw Aida at a coffee shop. Jenny was excited and wanted to meet the renowned soprano. David said he doubted she would remember him and didn't feel right about it. Jenny left, came back to get her scarf which she inadvertently left behind, and found David sitting with Aida. He explained that she remembered him after all. Jenny was excited to meet her. After Jenny left, Aida gave David a camera and told him to get two photographs of Jenny. David said he wanted to keep her out of this. Aida said it was too late. He shouldn't have brought her to New York.

Aida appeared in Llanview at David's house to give him further instructions on his assignment and to begin work. With a major snowstorm raging and a car that wouldn't start (due to Aida's henchman sabotaging it), Aida was sure Jenny was stuck at the hospital for a long while. Jenny managed to get home, however, by getting a ride with a snow plow driver. She walked in on Aida and David and didn't like what she saw. Aida sent signals that suggested an affair was going on. Jenny got suspicious and angry at the lies David was coming up with to explain Aida's interest in him and Llanview...since he said he barely knew her. He eventually explained that they had an affair once and she showed up in Llanview to rekindle it...but that would never happen. Jenny accepted the explanation. David continued to work on his assignment --- taking a list of names and writing a code for them in music. He agonized over the fact that many years ago he pledged allegiance to a cause he no longer believed in and now must do this work for them.

David told Jenny that he had a chance to conduct the orchestra in Berlin. He wanted them to go there for a month and then decide what to do long term. She was not anxious to make the move and leave family and friends but after much convincing by David decided to go along with the plan. A federal agent met with Herb to show him a tape that proved David was involved with enemy agents. The US agent later met with Jenny and told her David was working against the US government. She was stunned and didn't believe it. She reminded him of David's human rights work and the lives he saved. The agent said he had always worked both sides. They asked her to help them by keeping tabs on David's comings and goings and reporting back to them.

Attention began to focus on David's closely guarded attache case. The Feds, working with Herb, knew that David was working on a code and they wanted it. Herb asked Jenny to get pictures of the contents which she managed to do using Michelle's camera. She became worried, however, when David saw the camera and said he would take it to Michelle, who was staying with a friend, in case she needed it.

On the day of their supposed departure for West Berlin, Jenny planned to go with David to the wedding of Laurel and Larry. He picked her up in a limousine. The driver made a "wrong" turn and Jenny told him. David then told her they were going straight to the airport, not to the wedding. He said she took some interesting pictures with Michelle's camera. Jenny looked frightened and tried to get out of the car. He stopped her and said he would never hurt her and that he loved her. She realized they were not going to West Berlin. David said no... to Havana and then to an East European country. He would tell her which one when they got on the plane. Jenny was devastated. She called him a traitor to his country. He said he had no choice -- they threatened her life.

When Jenny said she couldn't go because she didn't have her passport, David pulled out her new passport with her new name. Jenny said she would not go and tore it up. They embraced and David said he knew what he had to do. He took the briefcase to Aida and said she should take it and and leave, but he wasn't going. Aida assured him he was, and pulled out a gun. David heard Jenny scream and saw that she was in jeopardy. He ran back to help her and in the ensuing scuffle David was shot. An unconscious David was carried onto the plane which flew off leaving Jenny sobbing on the runway.

The feds and Herb arrived to find the plane just taking off and an hysterical Jenny. They began plans to intercept the plane, and informed her that either the plane returned willingly or they would stop it. She frantically told them that the briefcase didn't contain the code...that she switched the cases. They returned to Jenny's house and retrieved the code. Jenny was very worried about David and couldn't shake the image of him carried wounded onto the plane. Herb went to the feds seeking some peace of mind for Jenny about what happened to him. Initially she was told that they thought he made it to Havana alive. They later confirmed that he was alive and in a country in East Europe, but not sure which one.

Four months passed. Jenny did her best to get on with her life, and gave the best explanation she could to friends who wanted to know why David was gone and she was still in Llanview. Cassie especially found the situation odd. Herb arrived at his hotel room to find someone waiting for him in the dark. It was David. He had returned with information on the activities of agents who were enemies of the US. He hoped the feds would exchange the information for his freedom and immunity from prosecution. He desperately wanted a chance to make things right with Jenny.

Herb told David exactly what he thought of him and his actions against his country. David tried to explain that he did what he did out of fear for Jenny's safety but Herb wasn't buying the story. Herb agreed to take David's offer to the feds. He did and they were interested in talking with him. The concern now was where to hide him until David and the feds could meet since Aida York and her people were looking for him to silence him before he could talk.

Herb brought Larry into the picture. They decided that a great place to hide him would be at the hospital in a restricted area of the psychiatric ward. An elaborate plan to have an "out of control" David (head and face bandaged) taken to the hospital by ambulance was put into place and successful. A US agent doubling as his nurse was the only person allowed into the restricted area. In the weeks ahead there was much talk at the hospital about this mysterious patient on the ward who no one saw. Jenny was ready to return to work and asked Larry for her job back as a nurse on the psychiatric ward. Larry, realizing this would be a big problem, told her there were no openings and budget crunches meant they would not be adding any staff. In chatting with another nurse, the nurse mentioned to Jenny that they were understaffed in the psychiatric ward and wished she would come back to work. Jenny didn't understand why Larry lied.

Aida York had been tapping Herb's phone in an attempt to get a clue about David's whereabouts. She was just about to give up and leave the country (figuring he was still somewhere in Europe) when she heard Jenny ask Herb what he made of Larry's lying to her about there being no jobs at the hospital. Aida thought there may be a link and began to suspect that this may be a clue to where David is. Jenny put two and two together and suspected that the mystery man on the psychiatric ward and Larry's reluctance to let her return to work were connected. She managed to sneak into the restricted area, opened the door and came face to face with David. They embraced and then she quickly pulled away. He told her what happened after the airport incident...he was in a coma for months. They tried to get him to redo the code but he wouldn't. He apologized for the hurt he caused her, tried to explain his reasons for doing what he did, and explained that he returned, though dangerous to do so, because of her. Jenny didn't want to hear any of his explanations, and left.

When David learned that Cassie and Rob planned to honeymoon in Europe and Cassie intended to look David up in Berlin, he panicked. He feared for her safety, concerned that Aida's agents would kidnap her and use her as leverage to find him. With help from a friend, Jenny managed to keep Cassie and Rob from leaving the country. Cassie stumbled onto Jenny's role in sabotaging her honeymoon plans and demanded an explanation. Cassie learned that David was back and they had a reunion at the hospital.

Aida had figured out that David must be at the hospital. She enlisted the aid of a former doctor at the hospital, Ivan Kipling, to infiltrate the psychiatric ward and kill David. The doctor would normally be recognized as the person who once tried to kill Larry, but he was a master of disguise and thus would be able to pull this off. He was unwilling to take on this assignment from Aida, however, having turned away from his evil ways. Aida blackmailed him, threatening to have his whereabouts revealed to the authorities, if he didn't go along. Ivan arrived at the hospital believed to be a renowned physician in the area of neurology. Larry greeted him warmly, and gave him full access to the psychiatric ward and the freedom to see patients...except in the restricted area. Ivan still managed to get into the restricted area and saw David through the window.

Some time back, Ivan met Cassie and became fond of her. Cassie saw Ivan at the hospital and knew he was not who he said he was. He convinced her that he was a friend and that she should not reveal his true identity. Because of his regard for Cassie, Ivan felt he could never kill David as Aida wanted. He therefore told her that he had searched the entire psychiatric floor and David was not there. Aida didn't believe it and she arranged for her own hit man to be admitted to the ward. They eliminated the security force and the nurses on duty and proceeded to David's room to kill him. Ivan realized what was happening and moved to intervene.

Cassie was trying to warn David and Jenny about the impending danger when Aida and her henchman arrived in his hospital room, guns in hand. Aida aimed at David but instead shot her henchman whom David had used as a shield. Jenny knocked Aida out and the three fled to a deserted cabin. Once there the three tried to figure out what to do next. David was disillusioned because any chance of a deal was now gone. Since everything was out in the open, the feds could not now permit a "traitor" to escape punishment -- the public would be outraged. Cassie headed back to LLanview. David and Jenny talked and she gave in to the fact that she still loved him. They made love.

Ivan, now an ally of David because of Cassie, had an idea. He thought the best way out for David was to make people think he died. He said there was a drug that he developed that he proposed to administer to him which would make him appear to be dead. There would be no detectable pulse or breathing. The antidote would have to be administered within 12 hours or death would really occur. Jenny hated the idea and was fearful that something could go wrong. David saw no other choice and agreed. In the meantime, Cassie had arranged to have Aida figure out where David was hiding.

Ivan administered the drug just as Aida and pals arrived. David immediately collapsed. Jenny, hysterical, just wanted to hold on to David, but Ivan was finally successful in getting her to hide. Aida entered. They examined the body and confirmed he was dead. Ivan said he killed him with poison. Aida wanted to know where Jenny was so she could eliminate her as well. They searched the house but didn't find her. Aida threatened to kill Ivan if he didn't say where she was. Jenny came out of her hiding place. A gunshot was fired and missed Jenny and Ivan...but in the ensuing scuffle the vial of antidote that David needed was broken. The police arrived. One of Aida's men was captured. Ivan and Aida escaped. Jenny craddled David's body. Ed confirmed David was dead and he was taken to the morgue.

Everyone was in panic mode now because David needed the antidote. Ivan arranged to meet Cassie and gave her the formula for the antidote. All that was needed was an item from the hospital pharmacy. Jenny freaked out when they planned to do an autopsy right away. She said she wouldn't allow it. She was told, however, that what the feds wanted took precedence in this case. She convinced Larry that she needed more time to adjust to the idea. Brad Vernon had been observing Jenny's reaction since David's death. He and Larry discussed how different it was as compared to her reaction to her previous husband's death. Where were the tears? Brad also observed her reaction to the idea of the autopsy and thought it was all very odd.

Jenny tried to get into the pharmacy but was thwarted. She enlisted Rob's help (he now worked at the hospital). She would distract the floor personnel while he got into the pharmacy. All went well but as soon as Rob found the bottle he needed, he was discovered. His lame explanation for why he was there created even more suspicions. He ran out of the pharmacy with the bottle and passed it to Jenny before he was caught by security. Jenny raced to the morgue with just minutes to go until the 12 hours were up. Larry was on his way to the morgue to give the morgue guys their answer. Just as she was about to inject the antidote, Larry walked in, took the syringe and asked her what she was doing. Jenny explained that David wasn't really dead and that the syringe had the antidote. Larry thought she had gone over the edge...surely she didn't believe this doctor's story. Jenny, in total panic at this point, begged Larry for the syringe. With two minutes to spare she injected the antidote.

Ivan had told Jenny that David would wake up immediately when he got the antidote. When he didn't, she fell apart believing he really was dead. Larry consoled her. A few minutes later Jenny heard David call her name. They embraced and prepared to leave when Larry said he couldn't let him go. Larry eventually agreed (saying he would tell them they lost the body -- it happens). Larry told David to take care of Jenny. They left for Ivan's place (he had given it to them as a hiding place). Jenny went back and forth from her house to the hiding place while they figured out how to get out of the country. Brad had been observing her and followed her one day to see Jenny and David together through the window. Brad went to Ed's office with thoughts of turning David in but decided against it.

Brad arrived at Jenny's house and told her he saw her and David together. She was very angry at Brad but he convinced her he was not going to turn him in. They tried to think of a way out of the situation. Brad said the only answer he could come up with was that she would have to marry him. Jenny was not amused. Brad then told her his scheme. They "marry" and David assumes his identity as Brad Vernon. They leave the country and Brad starts a new life in another city with a new name. Jenny told David the idea and he immediately hated it. Eventually Brad convinced them that it was the only way out. David remained skeptical knowing that Brad really wanted Jenny back. He feared Brad would turn him in. The plan called for Jenny and Brad to announce their engagement and act like they are in love when in public. Jenny made it clear to Brad that this would be nothing but pretend between the two of them...he shouldn't ever think otherwise. She loved David. Brad said he was clear about that. The wedding day arrived. Jenny and Brad were to be married and then sail away on the Buchanan yacht (where David was now hiding). Dorian was paying close attention to all this and started to be suspicious. She went to the yacht and discovered David. They talked and she said she would not tell anyone that he was alive. David and Dorian said goodbye. The wedding ceremony went as planned. Jenny and Brad were "married".

Aida York was still hunting for David and had followed Jenny to the wedding. With a special piece of equipment, she was able to hear of Jenny's and Brad's plans to head for the yacht to begin their honeymoon. At the yacht, Jenny and Brad informed David that all went as planned. They shipped off. While at sea, with Brad in another part of the yacht, Aida York appeared and promptly shot David who collapsed. The gun was knocked away and Jenny and Aida struggled as Aida pulled her knife and tried to stab Jenny. David struggled to reach the gun and help Jenny. Jenny pushed Aida across the room. She fell on a sharp object and collapsed. Brad returned at the tail end of the commotion and pronounced Aida dead. Jenny tended to David's wound visibly shaken that she had taken a life. He told her it was self defense -- Aida would have killed her. Brad took care of disposing of the body.

Jenny and Brad had a few private moments to say goodbye. She thanked him for what he had done and encouraged him to make good of that fresh start and find someone to share his life with. They agreed to keep in touch through a newspaper called the Intruder ---- sold throughout the world. They agreed to check it each week and if either needed to get in touch with the other they would place an ad in the personals. David returned to the room and slipped something into Brad's pocket while he wasn't looking. Brad and David shook hands. Brad told David he expected Jenny to be happy. David promised. Brad discovered the item David slipped into his pocket. It was the opal he had intended to give to Cassie. In a note, David said that Cassie and Rob would be fine and didn't need it. He noted the sacrifice that Brad had made and said that if Brad sold it he would have enough money to get him started with that new life.

Larry was also having a bad year. Tracy James was causing havoc all over town. She killed Dr. Marcus Polk, Viki's long time psychiatrist and then pinned the murder on Clint and forged medical documents insinuating that Viki had not yet overcome her multiple personality disorder. Viki was locked up in an asylum where Tracy was working. In addition, Tracy was a major pain in Larry's side. She continued her twisted romantic pursuit of him and killed his new wife Laurel by snapping the brakes on her car. She also kidnapped Larry and locked up in a secret room in his own basement, which was constructed to resemble his office at the hospital! Tracy proved to be her own worst enemy however. Larry escaped and Tracy, planning to blow up half of Llanview with a bomb, was distracted by her favorite song, Frank Sinatra's "I'll Be Seeing You." The bomb detonated and Tracy and her sidekick Stick were killed.

1986

Tina journeyed to El Paso, Texas, to investigate a mysterious letter that Clint Buchanan received from Maria Vasquez. In Texas, Tina met Maria's handsome son, Cordero (John Loprieno), and the chemistry between the two was instant. After learning from Mitch Laurence that Cord was Clint Buchanan's son, Tina married him. When Cord learned the truth of his parentage and discovered Tina's lies and manipulations, he told her that their marriage was over. On the rebound, Cord developed an intense sexual attraction to brainy archaeologist Kate Sanders (Marcia Cross).

Viki and Clint's second wedding day featured a special surprise announcement. Having recently recovered from her most recent bout with schizophrenia, Viki stunned Clint on the morning of their wedding with the joyous news that she was pregnant with their child. In September, Viki and Clint's daughter, Jessica, was born.

Viki fainted when she set eyes on Mari Lynn Dennison's distinguished looking father, Tom. He was the spitting image of Viki's late husband, Joe Riley. It was later revealed that Tom was Joe's long-lost twin brother. Needless to say, it was another obstacle in Viki and Clint's already-tortuous marriage. Viki began finding herself falling in love with Tom!

Months passed and David and Jenny had settled into a quiet life as Mr. and Mrs. Brad Vernon in a small Austrian town. Jenny became concerned that she had not gotten hold of a copy of the Intruder recently and checked it as she promised Brad she would. In the meantime, Dirk (an associate of Aida's) and his cohorts had been looking for David and found out where he was.

Back in the states Brad (now a horse breeder named Bud Van Dyke) worried that Jenny had not responded to his ad in the Intruder alerting them that their whereabouts may be known. David brought home a stack of newspapers from home. Included in the stack was the Intruder. Jenny saw the ad from Brad and yelled for David. They frantically started packing having realized that the ad was placed some time ago and that there was no telling how close they were to being discovered. At that very moment, Dirk was on the road to their house. David slipped the original sheet music of the song he wrote for Jenny into the piano as a sign to anyone who might come looking for them that all was not well (because he would never leave that music behind). David and Jenny opened the door to leave and came face to face with Dirk...gun in hand. They expected to be killed but when they weren't wondered what was in store for them. The "Party's" plan was to use David as a propaganda tool. David would announce his defection to one of the East European countries.

They took Jenny away and let David know her safety was tied to his cooperation. She would be waiting for him in his new homeland and he would join her after a farewell concert and his announcement of his defection before a large assemblage of international press. On the way to the new location where they intended to keep Jenny, she escaped and managed to call Llanview and make a plea for help to Viki. She arranged to meet Viki and Clint at a hotel in Vienna.

Under duress, David gave an "exclusive" interview to a US journalist about his defection. A woman, pretending to be Jenny (with face mostly shielded by a huge hat), was in the photo that accompanied the story in newspapers around the world. Viki, Clint, and Cassie did not believe for a minute that David would defect and the call from Jenny just confirmed that this was happening against their will. Viki knew that the woman in the picture with David was not Jenny. Viki and Clint headed to Vienna where the farewell concert was to be held. They presented themselves as American journalists there to cover the story for their newspaper. Against her mother's wishes, Cassie also went to Vienna. Cassie discovered the empty house where David and Jenny were staying, and the sheet music left behind as a clue. Brad was already in Vienna having gone out of worry about Jenny.

Dirk's people were desperately trying to apprehend Jenny who had been successful in eluding them. Brad found her and Jenny was relieved to see a friendly face. She took sanctuary in a church and Viki found her there. Dirk's people surrounded the church and were determined that Jenny would not leave it until the concert and the press conference had occurred. Viki and Clint went to the concert hall and tried to slip the sheet music into David's piano as a sign that Jenny was alright, but Dirk's people intercepted it. Brad and Cassie entered the church behaving as tourists there for a church service. Their plan was for Jenny to change into Cassie's clothes and for Cassie to dress in nun's habit. They would walk out of the church at the same time. Cassie would run and Dirk's people would chase her thinking it was Jenny, while Brad and Jenny escaped. The plan worked.

Inside the concert hall David was completing the concert; next would be his speech to the press. Clint and Viki were in the audience and Clint was prepared to call a halt to the whole charade if necessary. Brad and Jenny arrived at the concert hall but the guards wouldn't let them in. Dirk's people saw Jenny and there was an immediate change in plans. The curtain dropped and David was spirited off to a car which raced away to the train station. Brad and Jenny followed in a cab. When Jenny and Brad got to the train station they searched for David. Jenny saw him on the Embassy Express headed for Prague, Czechoslovakia just as it pulled away. David saw Jenny as well and knew she was free.

Dirk informed David that he would still give his defection speech...once they crossed the border. David said no one would believe it. He tried to convince the conductor that he was being taken across the border against his will but Dirk convinced the conductor that David was a mental patient and to pay no attention to what he said. Dirk tormented David with the additional threat that Jenny's death was the next order of business...appropriate that he should suffer a loss since he took from the world the incomparable Aida York.

Viki learned that there was one stop before the train crossed into Prague. She and Clint drove there in an effort to delay the train until help arrived. Cassie rallied the press who now believed that the whole defection business was a farce. She convinced them to drive to the location where Clint and Viki were headed and expose this travesty to the world. All the press headed there. Clint and Viki overcame the customs guards and dressed in their uniforms. They were successful in stalling the train's departure until Dirk went to insist that they leave. He discovered Viki and pulled a gun on her. David was being watched by one of Dirk's men. Clint saw David in the compartment, a fight ensued and Clint prevailed. David was freed.

Everyone seemed to converge on Dirk at the same time. Cassie and the press arrived; David and Clint arrived; Brad and Jenny arrived. David and Jenny reunited as did David and Cassie. Dirk, citing diplomatic immunity, got back on the train and continued on to Prague. David couldn't believe what a lucky man he was. He let Jenny know they were truly free now and could live their life openly and without fear. He was certain there would be no more attempts to harm him...they would never try it after such a public embarrassment. They decided to make Vienna their home.

Jenny and Brad said a tearful goodbye as did David and Cassie. Brad and David admitted that they had grown to like each other and gave each other a goodbye hug. Alone, David and Jenny hugged and talked happily of the future. Jenny felt something in David's pocket. He pulled it out. It was the opal that David had slipped into Brad's pocket when they first parted. He had given it back to Jenny and David for their fresh start.

Back home, Cassie (who had been adopted by Dorian's husband, Herb) found herself a little too close for comfort while investigating the illegal activities of cult leader/drug dealer Mitch Laurence (Roscoe Born). Mitch attacked and tried to rape Cassie, but before he could finish what he started, Cassie's mother clobbered him with a piece of sculpture. Unable to prove her innocence, Dorian was convicted of Mitch's murder and sent to Statesville Prison. Months later, she was released when a tape was found proving that Dorian killed Mitch in self-defense.

Trouble arose later, however, when one of Mitch's ex-cult members, Allison Perkins (Barbara Garrick) kidnapped little Jessica at Llanfair, while Viki, still recovering from her latest bout of Niki Smith, lay exhausted in her bedroom. When Maria learned of Allison's crime, she used it to her full advantages, trying to convince Clint that Viki was still Niki Smith and had kidnapped her own daughter. Major problems rose again for Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan when Clint was being tugged by Maria in one direction and Viki, in hurt retaliation, leaned on Tom Dennison for support. When Allison was later in a car accident, it left her comatose and unable to tell the Buchanans of Maria's part in the kidnapping. Jessica was later returned, unharmed, by Allison's mother, while Maria was readying to enact one last despearte plot for revenge.

Max Holden (James DePaiva), an old friend of Cord's mother, Maria Vasquez (BarBara Luna), arrived in town to ask her for a loan. She agreed to give it to him, but only if he would agree to lure Tina away from Cord. Tina, hurt that Cord was chasing after Kate, agreed when Max suggested she move with him to Buenos Aires.

1987

Max and Tina arrived in Argentina, where Max had inherited a ranch. They were shocked however, to discover that the ranch was being used to raise illegal drugs. They were chased down by Dante Medina and Jamie Sanders (Mark Philpot), Kate's brother. Rushing to Argentina, Cord was just in time to witness his pregnant wife plummeting over the Iguazu Waterfall. Cord mourned for Tina but then proposed to Kate. Meanwhile, Max learned from Jamie Sanders that Tina was still alive and being cared for by local natives. Max sold his ranch and invested in Delila's designing company.

In South America, Max's former lover Gabrielle Medina (Fiona Hutchison) found Tina and gave birth to her own child, a baby boy. Gabrielle, embarrassed with the prospect of raising an illegitimate child, gave her son to Tina, who believed that her own child had been stillborn after her trip over the waterfall.

Cord married Kate, but seconds after the ceremony, Tina stunned the wedding guests when she appeared out of the blue holding a newborn baby that she pretended was Cord's son! (Of course, the baby was actually Max and Gabrielle's.) Cord and Kate's marriage was invalid and Kate left town.

Determined to have her long-ago lover, Clint Buchanan, all to herself, Maria Roberts tried to kill Viki, by placing a deadly poison on a pair of earrings that Viki's sister, Tina, planned to give her as a birthday present. Just in time, Tina discovered Maria's deadly trick, and in a struggle, Maria was infected with a lethal dose of the poison.

Melinda witnessed the murder of mobster Alex Crown, so his murderer, Donald Lamarr tried to make Melinda think she was insane.

During surgery to remove a potentially deadly aneurysm in her brain, Viki Buchanan had an out-of-body experience in which she was reunited with her loved ones in Heaven. When she emerged from her coma, Viki realized that it was Clint that she actually loved, and not Tom Dennison (or the memory of her dearly-departed Joe Riley). Clint and Viki happily reunited.

Clint was shot and blinded by Jamie Sanders as he attempted to break Tina out of prison. Sarah Gordon (Jensen Buchanan) was called in to act as Clint's physical therapist in his recovery. Sarah and Cord became attracted to each other, especially after Tina's lies once again prevented her from reuniting with her ex-husband.
