PCX - The Facts

What Is PCX?
  • The PCX file format was developed by the ZSoft Corporation for the PC Paintbrush program in the early 80's. It is a very simple format that uses Run Length Encoding (RLE) to compress the image data. At first it was only possible to store images with 16 colors, each of which given by a 3 byte RGB value.
  • This file type is hardly used these days because of the limitations of the color depth and the domination of Gif and Jpeg.
  • But a problem that i came across with this type of format was that when using Paint Shop Pro, i saved the following picture as a PCX file, but it only allowed me to save it in 2 colors, compared with the normal JPG along side.
  • You have to be careful if you want to use this file type because it has a very limited color depth.
