Who's Who for Trapper John, M.D.

a list of recurring characters

Essential episodes for the main characters.
Trapper Pernell Roberts
"Trapper" John McIntyre is not only the title character, he is the only character who is "borrowed" from another series, M*A*S*H, which was based on the movie, which was based on the book by Richard Hooker. In the book he was John Francis Xavier McIntyre, Boston Irish, single, and reprehensible in most areas except for surgery. By the time of the series, M*A*S*H, his character had been blended with "Duke" Forrest, and was now married with two little girls. By TJMD, he is divorced, and the writers are not keeping careful track of how many children he has.
Gonzo Gregory Harrison
"Gonzo" George Alonzo Gates is a brilliant, but somewhat uhm problematic surgeon. Like Trapper he is a cardiovascular surgeon and he has done a five year residency in emergency medicine.
Stanley Charles Siebert
Stanley Riverside, II. The object of our affection -- or our affectations, if you wish. See the bio.
Ernie Madge Sinclair
Ernestine Shoop, R.N., is one of Trapper's oldest friends, and one of the best scrub nurses in his experience. A native of Jamaica, she had given up nursing, but was persuaded, by Trapper, to come back after the death of her husband. She becomes the nursing supervisor of SFMH, but keeps on scrubbing as nurse for Trapper as part of the deal. She has two sons, one of whom is named Louis. If Stanley is my all time favorite, Ernie comes in a close second. She's great.
Gloria Christopher Norris
Gloria Brancusi, R.N., who was temporarily stuck with the nickname "Ripples", is one of the nurses who floats between ER and the fourth floor. Single, but hoping, she eventually adopts a young girl with medical problems named Andrea.
Jackpot Brian Mitchell
"Jackpot" Jacob (?) Jackson, the son of a judge, is first intern and then resident in Stanley's Emergency Room. A gifted doctor, he is also a risk-taker, who is willing to invest energy and time into various schemes which might pay off.
Arnold Simon Scott
Arnold Slocum is the hospital administrator who is sometimes friend and sometimes adversary to Trapper and the others. He has the thankless task of trying to satisfy the minginess of the board against Trapper's continual pleas for more personnel. He replaced Willard Hornsby (Paul Lambert(?)) after the episode "Taxi in the Rain."
Starch Mary McCarty
"Starch" Clara Willoughby, R.N., was Trapper's scrub nurse and dogsbody in the first season. She didn't like Stanley very much. She got married and retired, which is why Ernie came on board.
Melanie Jessica Walter
Melanie McIntyre is Trapper's ex-wife. They get along very well though, and whenever Trapper is hurt or sick, she's the first person that anyone thinks of notifying.
EJ Marcia Rodd
EJ (for Ethel Jean) Riverside is the dentist who won Stanley's heart. And hand. Just what he needed. Someone who really loves him.
J.T. McIntyre Timothy Busfield
JT is Trapper's son, an intern who arrives at Memorial having gotten himself in trouble at another hospital. Impetuous and a little bullheaded, he eventually inherits the Titanic when Gonzo leaves.
