"do you smoke?"
that was the first thing she asked me
out at the big tables in the middle of the quad
she opened up her crocheted bag and pulled out a tin box
"I always roll my own, it's my way of slowing down my habit."
she had these nonesense ways of making sense
coffee in one hand
cigarette in another
she would rant about the troubles of addiction
she always smelled like wildflowers
sometimes i couldn't speak around her
she was so enveloping
she took all the air around us
her laughter would echo through the walls
she never cared when people would stop and stare
i think she liked it
i know i liked it
"let's skip class and go swing dancing."
she scrawled those words on my text book
inorganic chemistry
next to a sticker that said 'used'
we snuck out at the break
she feigned female trouble
i just grinned and ran
we took off in her nissan and sped away
"she thinks i'm a chevy."
that's what her car said
the little sign around the plate
she loved old cars and big trucks
she liked the power of a big engine
she liked to drive with the big boys
her parents bought her this car
said it was 'practical'
"you should leave him."
she wrote to me in a letter from new york
she had moved there on a whim
just to see what it was like
packed up her rolling papers and drove away in that practical car
she had a road ahead of her
i didn't know what to say
she took my air with her
i wish she had taken me
