Come back in time with me to August 15, 16, and 17, 1969. What's so important about those days you ask? Well, those were the days of Woodstock. For those of you who are clueless, Woodstock was a three day music and art fair held in New York. It was originally to be held at Wallkill, but that all changed and it ended up at White Lake, N.Y.. Over 40,000 people attended this festival, dispite the trafficjams, and the shortages of food, water, and medical facilities.

Many famous musicans performed at Woodstock such as Joan Baez, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, and Janis Joplin.

Tickets sold for $8.00 each day or $18.00 for all three days. In the end though, these tickets weren't needed when unpatient fans rushed down fences and got in for free. There aren't too many of these tickets, stubs attached, left. If you are one of the very few lucky people who have one of these rare tickets, be sure to hold onto it for it is worth a pretty penny. Plus, be sure not to tear off the stub or it will be virtually worthless.

Although it rained all three days, no one gave up hope. They all found some way to have the time of their lives. For most of the people that attended, that meant tripping out on marijuana, hashish, LSD, barbitrates, amphtamines, mesculine, cocaine, and other drugs. But they were the generation of the flower children and nothing got them down.

Biographies

Joan Baez was born in Staten Island, N.Y. on January 9, 1941. She is a folksinger and guitarist noted for her strong, pure soprano voice. Baez was a singer in Cambridge, Mass. coffeehouses in the mid 1950's. She first reached a national audience at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival. An early Bob Dylan enthusiast, she recorded many of his songs, as well as those she herself composed. In 1970, Baez more or less retired from singing while continuing to work for other political causes. In 1985 she returned to the stage, opening the immensely successful Live Aid Concert. In 1989 shr celebrated her three-decade career in show buisiness with an album entitled Speaking of Dreams.

James Marshal "Jimi" Hendrix was born in Seatle, Washington on November 27, 1942. He ws a rock music guitarist-singer-composer whose unique instumental techniques and blatantly sexual stage performance made him an instant sensation. His 1966-69 trio (Hendrix, Noel Redding, bass, and Mitch Mitchell, drums) stunned Europe with it's unpresidented music. United States recognition came at the 1967 Montery Pop Festival. In 1969 he gave a stunning performance at Woodstock Music and Art Fair. His life sadly came to an end on September 18, 1970 due to a drug overdose.

The Who was a British rock group who were popular in England in the mid-60's. Their stage performance, in which they destroyed insstuments, was found to be bizarre. By 1967 they had become a well known group in the U.S.. The Who consists of lead singer, Peter Townshend, bassist, John Entwistle, singer, Roger Daltrey, and drummer, Keith Moon. Moon died on September 7, 1978 and that only temporarily slowed the group's resurgence in the late 1970's. The group was still touring periodically through the early 1990's, and in 1993, Tommy was produced on Broadway.

Jefferson Airplane came out of San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury during the area's heyday as the center of the counter culture movement. They were founded by singer, Marty Balin and singer-guitarist, Paul Kantner in 1965. Grace Slick joined the group in 1966 and the band them gained a large following. From 1970, rifts between members caused a gradual disbanding. In 1974, Balin, Kantner, and Slick reformed the group under the name Jefferson Starship.

Janis Joplin was a rok singer born on January 19, 1943. She overwhelmed audiences with anger, passion, and sexual intensity in her singing. She was the lead singer with the rock group Big Brother and the Holding Company. From that she gained instant fame at the 1967 Montery Pop Festival. In 1969 she performed and the Woostock Music and Art Fair. She later went solo, and sadly died on October 4, 1970 of a heroin overdose.
