Anna & The King | |
In this version of Anna & The King, there is no wonderful Rodgers & Hammerstein musical score interspersed in the story. This movie relies on outstanding performances by Chow Yun-Fat as King Mongkut and Academy Award Winner Jodie Foster as Anna Leonowens. The story is set in the year 1862 as English widow Anna Leonowen has journeyed to Siam to be employed as a tutor for the children of King Mongkut. The story is far more complex than protrayed in the musical version. While the headstrong Anna plays havoc with a political system that requires constant bowing to the King, the relationship begins to grow closer as each develops an understanding of the other and becomes sparked with a just-beneath-the surface romantic undercurrent. Andy Tennant directs this movie with intensity and determination to put on a good show. He makes the most of the story subplots, such as attempted coup and threat to the King's royal family. Some may not like the Indiana Jones-ish ending, but Tennant concludes nicely and brings the story to a sophisticated close. This is a smart, well-crafted film with fine performances. Also available on DVD. Rated PG-13 for violence. | |
