Do You Acro?
If
the answer is yes, then you can probably understand the top part of the
page. And you probably also understand the annoyance of having to
wait for your favorite room. Or being really peeved at being kicked
off the server. But then you also understand the adrenaline rush
of reaching F/O (Face Off for non-Acroers). Or using a totally obscure
word and GATV (getting all the votes). Then you've reached just another
Acro site out of many on the net, except this one's specifically devoted
to the Alley. Why? Because it's my favorite room, of course.
I don't have any reason for this besides the fact that every time I've
been hooked on Acro, the Alley has been there. Some good general
sites devoted to the game (let's face it, it's not a game, so much as a
way of life) are:
Acro
Addicts Page -- The Site for Acrophobiacs, Acro fanatics, Acroholics,
etc.
Acro
All Night -- Much, much cooler than the regular Acro lounge.
(got a Acro site? E-mail
me and I'll put up a link. All that I ask is that you also provide
a link to my site, located at http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Cinema/7560)
If you don't Acro, you're probably
wondering what on Earth I'm talking about. Admittedly, this sounds
like some weird association or cult or addiction, but it's just an online
game (in the sense that Citizen Kane is just a movie). Either read
on to learn more or GGAN (go
get Acro now!) from the Bezerk website! Don't worry, it's a quick download
and is very easy to get started (and hooked on).

What Is
Acro?
It's an online game that has
been available for approximately a year (as of Nov. 17th, 1998) that was
developed by Berkeley Systems, who created the game You Don't Know Jack!
as well as the
website/online gaming network. Basically, you receive a bunch (anywhere
from 3-7) of random letters, such as MPYLRB and a category, like Celebrities.
And then you try to form an Acronym using these letters, like: Madonna
practices Yoga, looks really buff! within 60 seconds. Then everybody
votes on their favorite Acronym, points are received, et cetera.
Underneath the game is a built-in chat box, a feature which is much cooler
than it sounds, since the odds of pre-teen girls annoying everyone with
questions about the Backstreet Boys are slim.
But this describing how to play the game really doesn't do it justice.
It's something that you have to play to understand. It's enjoyable.
It's fun. It's basically akin to a really witty game of Scrabble
on amphetamines crossed with Scattegories on acid that you are playing
at a really cool cocktail party except nobody's going to vomit on your
$500 Gucci loafers and even if they are annoying, you don't have to listen
to a thing they say. I guess this is the best creative description
I could come up with. If you have another, send it to me at huntergrayson@hotmail.com.

Why Should
You Acro?
Well, many reasons:
-
It's fun.
-
It's funny.
-
It makes you seem clever and witty.
-
If it doesn't make you seem clever and witty, you
never have to face these people again, they're not your co-workers or family.
-
It gives license plates a whole new meaning.
-
Phrase which would *never* appear in an everyday conversation
are hilariously commonplace.
-
Winning feels really, really good.
-
But losing isn't all that bad.
-
It's interactive entertainment at its best.
-
You'll improve your vocabulary.
-
It makes the SAT more interesting. (Suddenly, Acros
terminate!)
-
Probably the best chat room on the Internet.
I hate chat rooms and love Acrophobia's.
-
The commercial breaks last less than 5 minutes and
will not interrupt a crucial dramatic and/or romantic moment.
-
You never liked having a social life anyway.
-
Besides, a virtual life lets you be 6'2", have penetrating
green eyes, thick brown hair, a year-round tan, a washboard stomach and
the ability to bench 250 lbs. (Seriously, I do look like this, that's
why I didn't include my picture on the Alley Cats page).
-
YWUTAEI! (Anyone who e-mails
me the correct answer to this Acro will be featured prominently on this
site).

The Acro
Challenge
No Acro site would be complete
without a fun game/challenge. The current Acro challenge is: The
Polysyllabic Acro. Create an Acronym without using any one-syllable
words from the following letters: ALLEY (General Acro is the category,
of course). Then e-mail
your answer with the subject line: '1st Acro Challenge.' (Be sure to include
your Acro Screenname) The results will be posted and a new challenge
will begin whenever I feel like it. Or whenever 65 people respond,
whichever comes first. Have fun!
