ILM was created by George Lucas in 1975 in San Francisco, with the help of a handful of people, so that he could create the special effects for his forthcoming movie, Star Wars: A New Hope. The early effects created by ILM used various physical methods. These methods included matte paintings, puppets, animatronics, models and a great use of blue screens. Some of these techniques are still used for today's effects, but most are done using green screens and digital animation, also known as CGI (computer generated image). ILM has been involved in over 150 movies and some side projects for Disney, Epcot Center, and Universal Studios. For their accomplishments, ILM has won 14 Academy Awards for best visual effects and 9 for technical acheivment. Though ILM hasn't been around that long, they are the leader in special effects, striving to make the ultimate effect of a realistic digital human actor.
