The Idea For Deep Space Nine Came About In 1991, which happened to be the 25th Anniversery of Star Trek. At that time paramount had a new chairman Brandon Tatikoff, who asked Rick Berman to Develope another Science Fiction Drama Series.
Executive Producers Rick Berman and Michael Pillor got together and discussed several Ideas for a new Star Trek Show, the idea of a Starfleet Academy series was brought up, but both Berman and Piller eventually came up with Deep Space Nine, DS9 is a somewhat Darker side to Star Trek and as the charecter Benjimen Sisko stated to Worf when he first joined the Station, Deep Space Nine has alot of shades of Grey.
The series started production alongside Star Trek The Next Generation in 1993. Deep Space Nine can now hold the destiction of having ran for the same lengh of time as STNG, DS9 is currently in its 7th and final season.
Colm Meaney who Plays the stations chief obrian was a reacurring charecter in Star Trek The next Generation, The part of Major kira on DS9 would not have exhisted in the show. It was originally Planned for Ensign Ro Laren to be DS9's First Officer, however those plans fell by the wayside when Michele Forbes decided she would like to pursue a film career
Deep Space Nine also Holds the destinction of being the first Star Trek Tv series which Gene Roddenbery had no Involvment in, Sadly Star Treks Creator died in 1991 two years before DS9 became a reality.
In Deep Space Nines Fourth Season Michael Dorn was approached by the producers who wanted him to portray his Star Trek The Next Generation Charector Worf. It was hoped that worfs addition to the crew of DS9 would help boost the shows ratings and get mores fans intrested in the show.
Sadly in 1998 at the end of DS9s sixth season Terry Farrel AKA as Jadzia Dax chose to leave the show, She had been offered a part in the US Sitcom Becker, and felt she had taken Dax as far as she could. So a new Charecter was introduced into the DS9 plot for its final year. The new Charecter is Exri Dax who is portrayed by Nicole Debour who has a background in Sci Fi shows such as Deepwater Black.

Following the withdrawl of the Cardassian Occupation forces from the planet Bajor, The Federation sends in a team to man the deep space Nine station.
They discover a stable Wormhole and uraval a religious Mystery which has spanned 10.000 years. In the mist of all this commander Sisko must come to terms with the death of his wife several years earlier, while the Cardassians have decided they would like DS9 back.
This two hour pilot reputedly cost over $12 Million dollers to make.
