Director William Castle used a couple of theater gimmicks. Whenever blood-curdling screams occurred in the movie, some of the theater seats received a jolt of electricity, (known as "Percepto") and shills planted in the audience let out their own screams.

Plot: A scientist (Price) discovers that fear produces a real physical creature within the spinal cord if the victim does not release their terror by screaming. The "Tingler" escapes from one unfortunate victim and terrorizes everyone.
