Black comedies always walk the fine line of comedy and taste. For an example of this, see Very Bad Things. Better yet, don't see it. A sweet, grizzly, sad, and funny comedy is rare indeed. Nurse Betty is such a movie.
A variation on the Wizard of Oz theme, Betty uses Zellweger's sweet, innocent looks to full effect. She is Betty Sizemore, wife to a sleazy used-car salesman who we find is involved in even more sisister activities. She happens to witness his brutal death at the hands of father/son hitman team, Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock. That sets her over the top, until she creates a delusional world for herself in which a favorite soap opera star of hers (Kinnear- a pleasant Soup to soap transition) becomes real. This neccessitates her creating a soap persona for herself as well, the sweet Nurse Betty to her ex-fiancee Dr. David.
