After alcoholic hubby Billy was carted off to the slammer, Vanessa went off and found a little lovin' on a deserted island with younger beefcake Matt Reardon. Soon enough, the writers forgot about Billy and Matt was touted as the great love of Vanessa's life. The two married, and then Vanessa was diagnosed with a rare debilitating disease. Not wanting her family to see her rot away, Vanessa faked her own death and went to Switzerland for experimental treatment. Vanessa recovered and found her way back to Matt, and immediately conceived a baby, but the pregnancy caused friction between Matt and Vanessa because of the possibility of a relapse. Vanessa is now out of remission, which she found out at the same time that she found out her baby is a girl. Matt wanted her to induce labor early, but Vanessa wouldn't hear of it. Vanessa nearly died delivering her baby, Maureen, but pulled through, as did her baby with the help of a kidney transplant from Holly.
