Lili Damita was born Liliane Carre in France on July 19, 1901.
She began her acting career on the stages of Europe, at the age of 19, forging a relationship with Marlene Dietrich, an actress from Germany. She first made her mark in a few French and German productions from 1924 to 1929 before coming to the United States to try her hand in a more lucrative film community, Hollywood, California.
Her first US film was THE BRIDGE OF SAN LUIS REY which was quickly followed by THE RESCUE and THE COCK-EYED WORLD.
Occasionally, Lili returned to Europe to play in some productions there. Lili wasn't a box-office smash by any means. Unfortunately, most of her performances went almost unnoticed.
Her next to last film was DEVIL ON HORSEBACK in 1936.( In 1935, she married Errol Flynn, helping him to become one of Hollywood's most renowned stars of all time. The two had a poor relationship, finally divorcing in 1942. The marriage did produce one son, Sean, who disappeared in Cambodia in 1970.)
Hollywood was now finished with Lili. There seemed to be no room for a woman who had no allure with the movie public.
She did make one more screen appearance in 1954 in a film remake of DEVIL ON HORSEBACK.
Lili died in Palm
Beach, Florida on March 21, 1994 at the age of 92, of natural causes.
