DiCaprio was 15 when he made his first film appearance in director Ron Howard's Parenthood (1990). After some TV work, DiCaprio was selected at the age of 17 for the demanding role of the stepson of bullying Robert De Niro in This Boy's Life (1993); despite their on-screen hostility, the actors got along splendidly off-camera, and DiCaprio has since credited DeNiro for providing him with encouragement and invaluable acting tips.
