As a child actor, Leonardo DiCaprio was rejected by a casting agent for having an "inappropriate" haircut. DiCaprio was 15 when he made his first film appearance in director Ron Howard's Parenthood (1990). After some TV work, DiCaprio was selected at the age of 17 for the demanding role of the stepson of bullying Robert De Niro in This Boy's Life (1993); despite their on-screen hostility, the actors got along splendidly off-camera, and DiCaprio has since credited DeNiro for providing him with encouragement and invaluable acting tips. The young actor followed this critical triumph with his Oscar-nominated performance as a retarded teenager in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? (1993). So convincing was his portrayal that many moviegoers believed the Gilbert Grape producers had hired a genuine developmentally-delayed youngster for the role.

Though not yet twenty, DiCaprio found himself a celebrity, able to turn down a lucrative offer to co-star in Hocus Pocus (1994) in favor of a less financially remunerative but more artistically satisfying assignment in the film version of Jim Carroll's novel The Basketball Diaries (1995). "My parents love it", Leonardo DiCaprio recently commented on the subject of his stardom. "My dad and I have creative talks, and my mom loves to see me in magazines."

ABOUT FRIENDSHIP:
Leo gives credit to his friends, as well as his family, for helping him stay sane (speaking about handling success).
Quote: "I have a good group of friends, people I've accumulated over the years. Some I've known since elementary school, some I've met recently. They're just a good group of guys and gals."
Qualities he looks for in a friend: Good kind-hearted souls.
Quote: "I really like to have sweet people around me. I can't stand bad people. There's too many of them in L.A. Just give me someone who's relaxed and cool to hang out with."

Though Leo's often seen hanging out with many different celebs and models, keep in mind that most of those sightings are at special celebrity functions where photographers are there specifically to take pics of stars hanging out together. I real life, however, Leo insists that his friendships, show biz or non-show biz, are deeper than snapshots in magazines.
Quote: "Our friendships are completely separate from everything else. I hardly know anybody who's in show biz. It seems like I do through all the press, but I really don't. (About the photographs) They don't see me hanging out in my room, or doing whatever normal things I do."

FUN FACT:
Leo's parents were devoted hippies! He got his name when his mother was looking at a Leonardo DaVinci painting in the Uffizi in Italy, and she felt a kick inside her womb.

Leo has always been interested in learning about dolphins, whales, and other creatures of the sea. If he hadn't become an actor, he says he probably would have gone to college to study oceanography. As it is, he spends whatever free time he can indulging his ocean-loving side.

"When I'm acting and I take a break, the first thing on my list
is spending time by the sea."

Leo has a new biography out called Leonardo DiCaprio: Modern Day Romeo...by: Grace Catalano. It sells for 4.99 at your local bookstore. It also contains 16 candid photos. So go out and get it!!!!!!

I got these funny facts from that biography:

" When he was a child, people mistook Leo for being a girl because of his long blonde hair and the outfits that he was dressed in."

" Whenever he has time off, Leo makes his own videos starring his friends."

"He has a large supply of five dollar glasses in all shapes and sizes"

Article Excerpts:
Added 3/13/97 from 16 April 1997: "Lanky Leo's a studmuffin study in contradictions. He writes poetry, but parties hearty; he has a roving eye for the ladies, but his heart belongs to mom, for whom he's building a dream house; he's easy on the eyes, but never checks out a mirror; he's a big star, but checks his ego at the door. On movie sets, he's been known to playfully hit people over the head-- with Twizzlers! Plus, he's got a pet bearded dragon lizard: what's not to love??"

Leo Takes Timeout for Flag Football
Added 07/14/97 information from BOP JUNE 1997: SKEET ULRICH has been, um, playing the field together. Skeet says "I did play flag football the other day and it was Leonardo DiCaprio's football. It was the first time I met him. We Won."
