"Now I don't want to get off on a rant here, but...." -Dennis Miller
Here is my Rant and Roar page. My rants vary in length depending on how I feel and how much I have to say about each issue. Once again, I'd like to point out that I am not trying to offend anyone in particular. This is just me blowing off some steam.
We've all heard the expression "ignorance is bliss". Well, that saying isn't always true. For example, if I'm about to walk off a cliff and don't notice, then ignorance definitely wouldn't be blissful. Sure, I might be happy not realizing that I'm waking towards the edge, but I can pretty much guarantee that I won't be very happy when I become a very large stain on the ground below. Ignorance may be bliss when it comes to things we can't change, such as how long we have to live but when it comes to things that we can change, then ignorance is far from bliss.
Having said that, I'd like to bring up a discussion I had with a friend of mine a few days ago. Now, before I continue, I would like to apologize to all of the friends I've been badmouthing in my rants lately. They're all great friends and great people. I usually end up taking a justified opinion or small mannerism of theirs and blowing it completely out of proportion to make some sort of point. My mannerisms and beliefs are just as irritating and annoying as everybody else's, probably more so. There, now that that's clear and the guilt is fading, we can get back to my screwed-up friend! She has been having really bad back pains for quite some time now. When I asked her if she showed it to a doctor, she said no, and that she had no intention of going to the doctor. Why? Because she didn't want to hear bad news.
Now, this is something that a lot of people do, and which I think borders on stupidity. Medical problems aren't like children seeking attention. Ignoring them won't make them go away, and buying them nice toys won't get them to say "thank you". Ok, that second one wasn't really relevant, but you get the point. Look, just because you refuse to let a doctor TELL you bad news, doesn't mean there ISN'T any bad news. The bad news will still be there, you just won't be able to do anything about it because you don't know what the hell it is.
My friend claimed that she already knew what the doctor would say. The doctor would tell her to wear special orthopedic shoes for a few months and she didn't want to wear them. Well you know something, so what?! Wear the damn shoes! It's not the end of the world. You may not LIKE the shoes, but I'll bet it's more fun then having horrible pains in your back. Now, I know what you are thinking. You're thinking "sure, that attitude is all well and good for minor medical problems, but what about major operations?". Either that, or you're thinking "This ass doesn't know what the hell he's talking about!" Well, if you're wondering the first thing, then my answer is still the same. If the doctor tells you that a major operation is needed, then (assuming money isn't your primary concern), you have the damn operation!
Now, operations aren't fun. Believe me, I know. I've had my fair share of medical operations when I was younger. They weren't the most fun I've ever had, but I can see now because of them. Also, I'm going to have a mole on my arm removed this summer because, over time, it has the potential to develop into skin cancer. This is only extremely minor surgery, but I'm not a huge fan of needles and I'd rather not have the operation. But not wanting to have an operation isn't a good reason for not having it. Ya, you may not like what's going to happen during the operation, but it's better than the alternative: having horrible pain for the rest of your life or DEATH.
A lot of people really need to stop acting like babies. What we want and what we need are very different things. It's time to bite the bullet and do what's needed. If you're in horrible pain, go see the doctor! Ignoring the problem isn't going to help. It's like a child who closes his eyes because he doesn't want other people to see him. Now, it isn't easy to convince people to see their doctor. If you refuse to go to the doctor and you are having terrible pain, then do us all a favor and shut up about it. If you're gonna keep complaining about it, then I'm gonna keep giving you the same answer "See the damn doctor!". So, either go to the doctor, or shut up.
