PART TEN

DIDN’T WE ALMOST HAVE IT ALL–PART 10

***RECAP: "Kevin, I was just at the drugstore and I found this," [Kristen] said, holding up a magazine, "and I don’t think you’re gonna like what’s inside."***

The loud doorbell echoed throughout AJ’s house, but he didn’t make any move to answer it. It rang again. "One second!" he called out, not wanting to drag himself off of his couch. His head was pounding and half of his body was numb.

He finally made it to the door, just in time to open it up and see Amanda standing there, a look of concern on her face.

"AJ! What the hell took so long?" she exclaimed, pushing past him into his house, "I was getting worried! I know I’m not supposed to worry about you like that, but lately I just don’t.....AJ? What’s wrong with you? Why are you looking at me like that?"

She took a step back and gave him a skeptical look. "Nothing, baby," he grinned, stepping closer to her, wrapping his arms around her waist, "I haven’t seen you in a while...I missed you."

He leaned over and kissed her lightly on the lips, but Amanda could tell something was wrong. "AJ," she said skeptically, "you’ve been taking those pills again, haven’t you?"

AJ laughed nervously. If there was one thing this girl was good at, it was seeing right through him.

"No way!" he answered, trying to look nonchalant, but it was too late. She was already on her way upstairs to the bathroom to investigate the situation. Seconds later, she reappeared at the top of the stairs holding a small bottle. "Why would you lie to me? Right to my face!" she exclaimed, shaking the pills as she descended the steps.

AJ shrugged, like a two year old who had just been caught for something he shouldn’t have been doing. "It just helps me through the rough parts of the day.....it’s no big deal, really."

Amanda shook her head. "It’s dangerous! Don’t you know that?! You are SERIOUSLY damaging your body every time you take a painkiller when you don’t need one! I think you need some help...."

"I don’t need help, all right?!" AJ shot back, turning away from her, "if you don’t like it, then you can leave! I don’t need ANOTHER mother telling me what to do!"

Amanda cringed at his infamous bad temper. "Listen," she said calmly, "I care a lot about you, and I don’t want to see you get hurt....I’m just worried that you’re keeping stuff from me....like stuff other than this."

He turned back around with a confused look on his face. "What other stuff?" he asked, furrowing his brow.

She reached into her purse and pulled out a clipped article. She unfolded it and handed it to AJ. "What is this?" he asked, but his voice dropped on the last syllable, as his eye caught the headline. He was silent for a few moments, the expression on his face turning from confused to shocked in less than three seconds. "Where did you get this?" he demanded, after he was done reading.

"This magazine comes to my house every week," Amanda explained, "and this week, the magazine had this article in it. If you didn’t want me to find out....."

"Amanda!" he screamed, "this article is fake! Either that, or someone’s out to screw us royally!" Amanda shook her head in confusion, and AJ continued. "We aren’t planning to record another album! We! That’s the fucking funniest thing I’ve ever heard! Because I haven’t used the word ‘we’ to describe those four flaming faggots in years!"

Amanda bit her lip, but AJ continued to rant. "Whoever is doing this shit is going to pay big time! You know who it is? I bet it’s Lou....big bad Lou put The Firm up to this....he probably gets a cut of the money! Or ya know what? It’s probably one of those cocksuckers....I bet it’s little Nicky! He’s probably stuck in some gutter somewhere and needs a quick buck!"

"AJ, stop!" cried Amanda. Despite the past conflicts, she had never had a problem with the other four guys. In fact, she hadn’t seen them in years, and kinda missed them. "You’ll find out whoever’s doing this, and get to the bottom of it, okay? Otherwise, don’t blame people if you’re not sure."

AJ gritted his teeth, as he stared at the article with complete hatred. He felt lightheaded and felt as though he needed a quick fix of drugs. However, he needed to wait until Amanda left before he could take anything.

"Hey everyone! I just wanna say congrats to everyone on such a great show!" Howie exclaimed, as he walked into the office on Monday. He hadn’t seen his coworkers since the actual day of the show, and he was still on top of the world.

He got no response. "Guys?" he said again, pausing outside his office door, glancing at the confused stares he was getting from his secretaries and workers, "is something wrong?" Usually, the people in his office showed more enthusiasm.

Nancy, one of his secretaries, gave him an almost dirty look. "Nancy?" he asked, getting more and more confused by the second, "what’s going on? Was it something I did?"

"As if you don’t know," retorted Mike, another worker, "if you had told us sooner, I could have at least looked for another job!"

Howie scrunched his face in utter confusion. "Would someone PLEASE like to tell me what’s going on?!" he exclaimed, throwing up his hands.

"You should have told us that you were planning on getting back together with the Backstreet Boys," answered Nancy, "because when you do, they’ll be no time for this anymore..."

"Whoah, whoah...wait," interrupted Howie, "I’m what?!"

Nancy handed him the dreaded article. He read it and immediately was furious. "This is....this is....how could anyone make up such crap!" he finally shouted, "I’m calling my lawyer....guys, please don’t worry! I’m not leaving here, I’m not rejoining the Backstreet Boys, and you won’t have to look for other jobs, okay?"

They all nodded in understanding, relieved their jobs were no longer in jeopardy. Howie burst through the door, and picked up the phone.
