Welcome to my new Western Mayland Photo history site. For now, I'm concentrating on a few particular areas of the Western Maryland Railway in the Alleghenies. Big Savage Tunnel, and Soon, the Magnolia Cutoff. Below are some of the now historic photos I've captured. All of the photos below wee taken before the tunnel reconstruction began.
Above, we see A view from Deal Road looking at the trackbed facing East (toward the tunnel about a mile away.)
dNow, above, we see The otherside of the road basically heading west on the trackbed toward Meyersdale.
This was the dilapidated west end of Big Savage Tunnel, while plans are to clean it up and run  a bike path through it.The tunnel is in the process of an 8 million dollar reconstruction project.
A closer look at what were the two gaping holes in the tunnel's ceiling were the result of 100 years worth of water flowing around the enterance. I've walked through to the other end of the tunnel (about 3500 feet), and found that the other portal is in great shape.
They've been in the process of channeling the water out of the tunnel through a pipeline into a nearby creek that runs around the mountain. This picture which is a bit outdated shows my father looking at what is now a "parking area" for heavy equipment.
A blurry picture of how the tunnel looked thirty years ago, while it was in operation.(note the structure mentioned above is now standing)
Next door to the Keystone viaduct is the Salisbury viaduct. It is now restored, and decked for hikers, and bikers. The photo shown above was taken in 1971, when the railroad was using it. It is the Western Maryland's second longest bridge.
About 10 miles west from Big Savage Tunnel (toward Meyersdale, PA) is the Keystone viaduct (shown above from the west, and east ends). It is on a curve, and about 910 feet long.
I NOW HAVE UPDATES on the reconstruction of big Savage tunnel!!!
