Because no man would touch a woman unless she gives him reason to. A touch or a look that says 'come on'. If you never look, they'll never come. You are the timid sex. -- Sue Bridehead

Kate's fourth film was titled Jude, an adaption of the Thomas Hardy novel Jude the Obscure. Co-starring Christopher Eccleston as Jude Fawley, Kate plays Sue Bridehead, Jude's cousin. The movie shows us the tormented relationship between Jude and Sue, as they fall in love with each other, but are not allowed to live as man and wife, for they are both married, not to mention relatives. Said Time about Kate's interpretation of Sue: "Sue flaunts her agnosticism and struts in bars, turning a cigarette into a smokestack." Kate's performance as Sue is so enchanting in part because it is not a performance -- Kate shines through as Sue, her portrayal is that real. Kate's ability to become a role is certainly shown in Jude, as she becomes Sue and lets the viewer in on the joy and pain of living a life where a person is not accepted, solely because of whom they love.
