Willis grew up in Penns Grove, New Jersey, the oldest of four children. He suffered from a severe speech impediment, but discovered that it disappeared on stage. He was voted student council president in high school and during his senior year was expelled for a racial disturbance. He was permitted to graduate after his father hired an attorney to reinstate him. After high school he worked at a DuPont Plant, but quit after a worker died of a chemical explosion.
