REST OF THE WORLD |
The Australian Cinema and Theatre Society is a non-profit organization, and was established in Sydney, New South Wales, in 1982. It is the only national organization in Australia which exclusively records and preserves the popular cultural history of "the world of the theatre" within the design and function of its architectural heritage. It also incorporates the many areas of the exhibition of motion pictures, and live theatre production.
Membership to ACTS, includung subscription to "Kino" is $AUS33.00 per year. International rate (inc air mail postage) is $AUS47.00 per year. Write to the Membership Secretary at the above address.
Through its publicationssuch as "Kino", and numerous books and videos, ACTS makes available information relating to Australian cinemas and theatres, and encourages further study in this neglected segment of our cultural history.
The Society seeks to bring together all individuals and groups interested in the history of theatres in Australia. ACTS strives to bring about a far wider recognition of many interesting (and often surprisingly beautiful), buildings that have housed motion picture and theatrical performances; to preserve all available documents relating to them; and, when possible, to raise a strong voice for the preservation of important buildings themselves.
The Society's archives contain in excess of two thousand photographs, slides, negatives, books, programmes and journals of Australian cinema and live theatre buildings. The archive is open to members and to the general public for purpose of research for a nominal fee. Arrangements to view the collection must be made with the Archivist. Write to the Archivist at the above address.
The Australian Cinema and Theatre Society Inc. is Australia's only international cinema and theatre society. It is associated with CINEMA THEATRE ASSOCIATION, Great Britain; THEATRE ORGAN SOCIETY OF AUSTRALIA; DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE, University of Sydney; NATIONAL FILM & SOUND ARCHIVE; AUSTRALIAN DRAMA STUDIES, University of Queens land; ARTS WEST FOUNDATION, Sydney; LANCASTRIAN THEATRE ORGAN TRUST, Great Britain; and HISTORICAL THEATRE'S TRUST, Quebec, Canada.
