ASTITVA

ASTITVA (2000). Starring Tabu, Sachin Khedekar and Mohnish Bohl. Anamorphic widesreen. 5.1 Dolby Digital. 120 minutes. Aspect ratio 2.15:1. With subtitles on the dialogue and songs.

Image quality is mostly excellent with rich, crystalline colors and only occasional muted detail and NTSC shimmering present. The 5.1 Dolby digital is both dynamic and delicate as needed, with an ample bass that is pleasing to the ear.

Astitva is a well-written story about infidelity, lonliness and the double standards that exist in modern day India. The acting by the 2 leads (Tabu and Sachin Khedeskar) is superb. They are supported by an excellent ensemble cast led by Mohnish Bohl. The 4 songs are all nicely picturised, as they compliment the story nicely while not being intrusive. The highlight song is "Chal Chal," in which Mohnish reveals his forbidden desire for the married Tabu and pleads with her to "Walk with me" in to a new life.

In conclusion, Astitva is a film that should be seen. Rent it or buy the DEI's high-quality DVD. You won't be disappointed. Highly recommended.
