12 Angry Men
This is a brilliant movie starring some fabulous actors of the day, including Henry Fonda and Jack Klugman. This is a movie that is pretty much set in one room with no special effects, no big bangs, etc., etc. and is a black & white film. However, it definately ends up in my all time favourite movie list. The movie centers around the 12 jurors who must decide upon the guilt or innocence of a young man charged with the murder of his father. All but one (Henry Fonda) are convinced of his guilt. The movie is brilliant and one I definately recommend!
Picnic at Hanging Rock
An amazing Australian film from 1975. Again, no special effects, just an amazing story that is supposed to be based on an event from 1900 in which a group of school girls leave on a St Valentine's Day picnic to Hanging Rock. Only two of the girls never returned. This film is beautifully shot and the music used is so appropriate to the entire feel of the film.
Phar Lap
The story of a famous Australian race horse that took to the hearts of all Australians. The film is set in the 1930's and shows the rise a horse, brought over from New Zealand, which started out as a bit of dud, but went on to win many of his 50 odd races, including the 1932 Melbourne Cup. |

Erin Brockovich
This is a movie that I can highly recommend and is a bunch of fun to watch. It's based on the true story of the real Erin Brockovich, a twice divorced mother of three who takes a position as a file clerk in a small town law firm. After stumbling onto some information that implicates a major public utilities company, she convinces her boss to let her pursue the case. This film is both funny and moving and I love seeing a film that shows a "gutsy broad" who speaks her mind.
The Green Mile
Tom Hanks stars in this brilliant movie which is an adaptation of a Stephen King tale. The story is set in a Louisiana prison with Hanks playing the part of Paul Edgecomb, a security guard who works on Death Row. During the course of the story, another inmate, John Coffey, joins the other prisoners on the Row who has been convicted of raping and murdering two girls. However, Edgecomb soon realises that Coffey doesn't fit the mould of the usual psychopathic killer; he's kind, gentle and afraid of the dark. Although this film is quite long it is well worth seeing to the end. The casting is perfectly done and if you're anything like me you'll be blinking away those tears at the end. |
