Pam's Picks -- Recommended Fanfic

On this page, I'll be spotlighting different stories; ones that I think are terrific and worth your time to read. (I'll just put up a link to wherever that story can be found on the web, usually to the main fanfic archive).  I want to point you to good stories, and authors, that you might otherwise miss. You may discover that you don't agree with my taste in stories at all, but that at least lets you know which stories *not* to read :-)

For other recommendations and reading suggestions, check out the list of Kerth-worthy stories on the archive.

I also post reader's picks -- if you'd like to see your recommendation posted here, send me an e-mail with the fanfic's title and author (and where to find it, if it's not in the Archives), with a brief description of why you think it's worth reading.

Once an author has been recommended here, I tend not to spotlight their subsequent works -- I assume if you liked the first story, you'll read that author from then on, so my recommendation would be redundant :-)  But of course, there are always exceptions.

Current recommendations:

Let's not dwell on how long it's been since I last made a recommendation... but there is something I do need to point to -- Long Strange Trip, by L.  H.G. Wells has found alt-Lois, and alt-Clark is overjoyed -- but she'd been kidnapped by Tempus, taken to yet another universe, and horribly abused for three years.  That universe was ruled by evil New Kryptonians, led by Lois's personal nightmare -- Lord Kal-El.  Clark may be her soul-mate, but his physical resemblance to her tormenter terrifies her.  He'd do anything to help her recover, but that's something she must do for herself.  The path to her recovery is definitely a long, strange trip, and well worth the time to read about.

(6/27/04)

He Said, She Said by Wanda Detroit.  A very cute account of a night on the town... short & sweet!

Long Strange Trip, by Leela.  This is a *very* long UNFINISHED story that's been "in progress" for a few years now, but it's nearing the end (I hope).  This is an alt-universe fic.  H. G. Wells discovers that Lois had been kidnapped into yet another universe, and abused for years... by the evil Lord Kal.  Wells rescues her, but she has nothing but fear and loathing for Superman.  Clark, nonetheless, is hopelessly in love with her.  This is the story of her recovery, and I'm in awe of what Leela's done.

Four Days to Nightfall, by Nan Smith.  Superman does not exist.  Clark Kent still lives in Kansas.  So when Lois finds Clark in a smoking crater, she has no idea who he is ... and neither does he.  Nightfall will wipe out most life on Earth in a matter of days, unless they somehow discover that the impossible ... isn't.

(Nan writes lots of series, which can be confusing to catch up with, so I've prepared this series guide.)

Midnight Gambit, by ML Thompson.  A perfect blend of plot, angst, and romance.  Desperate to keep Lois from marrying Lex, Superman pays her a late-night visit and offers her a few choices.  To his surprise, she asks for time to think about it, and then calls Clark over to help her work through her decision-making.

When Larry Met Charlie, by Wendy Richards.  What if Clark had come to Metropolis just a little earlier, and gone undercover to expose a ring of car theives?  He might find himself strangely drawn to a youngster called "Larry Long" -- who of course is actually Lois, who can't believe she's attracted to a car thief, "Charlie King".  And that's just the warm-up to this epic alt-beginning story.

The Ultimate Mary Sue, by Yvonne Connell.  A hilarious venture into wish-fulfillment.  Wouldn't *you* like to have Clark Kent as a neighbor?

Now THAT's What I Call ART! by Mary Potts (aka Queen of the Capes).  The Kent twins argue over artistic merit before finally finding something they can agree on.  Part of a series, but perfectly readable and funny on its own.

Persephone's Return by Paul-Gabriel Weiner.  Jace Mazik has Clark's parents, and he wants Lois dead.  But Lois has a plan... and it's not the one you'd expect.  And once that crisis is settled, things *really* get interesting.

Momentum, by Kathy Brown.  After their near-kiss at Christmas, Clark decides that this "just friends" thing with Lois might not be that great an idea, after all.  Maybe he could move things along a little bit -- one baby step at a time.

General Disclaimer: None of us own copyrights to Superman, Clark, Lois, etc, etc; they belong to DC Comics, Warner Bros, and who knows who else. We're just borrowing them to have fun; we're not making any money at this. And the fanfics recommended here represent my taste alone; there are tons of wonderful stories out there, way more than I will ever have time to list here.
