Legendary Newsies Fics
There has been a ton of Newsies fics hanging around on the net, but only a special few can be called legendary. So, on the Newsies Mailing List, I did a survay to see which fics peeps think are legendary. After I took the ones with the most votes. I did a poll to see exactly which ones got the most votes. The results were not very surprising to me. I've read most of the fics in the poll, so, I wanted to put up my own opinion about all of them. Also, I have my opinion of which fics should become legendary.

I can definitely see why this fic would be considered legendary. Heck, ANY fic Spitfire writes is worthy of being legendary! Learning to Receive is about a negro girl named Porter who is in some deep trouble with Brooklyn and has a lot of dark shadows following her around. She ends up in Manhattan at the lodging house, of course, and is warmly greeted by a host of different characters. Spitfire really knows how to make her storylines and characters interesting and enjoyable. She even changed my mind about Crutchy - a character who I almost despised when I first became a Newsies fan. Now I love him! Spitfire can really turn a simple story into something wonderful, and Learning to Receive is one of her biggest achievements.
I'm not quit sure what Christy's series is, but I have read a few of her fics before. They were really not that appealing to me, so, I can't say what or if I liked them.
The fic that gave me a hankering to actually see Newsies, I like it a lot. It use to be one of my favorites, but now I view it differently. Like the mistakes of the plot being right and the changing of character's attitudes. I know that it's hard keeping that all together when you're young ((I think Raindrop was 14 when she wrote this?)) and it's your first fic. Very good anyways!
I don't know how they did it, but Action and Skweeker sure know how to make a fic great! I read this fic a good while back and I remember seeing on different sites, but wasn't sure if it's be good. Turns out, it is one of the best Newsies fics written. Action and Skweeker are the lead characters. This is actually a 'later' fic in which there was a whole other story before it, but was never written. Action has a score to settle with Spot Conlon, and finds her gamble is still not welcome in NYC. I love how they threw in the hints of things that had happen in the past with the characters. I just really like everything about When the Dice Are Rollin'.
I'm surprised Sharkbait even wrote Stroke of Luck. If you know her, you'd understand. If you don't know her, then just think of her as a conservative, serious person. *cracks in laughter* Anyways, Stroke of Luck is a seriously long fic. I mean……loooooooooooooong. It took me about a week to read. Lucky poses as a boy to join the newsies, but only Jack knows what she really is. A ton of things happen throughout the story. Lucky is always getting beaten up by something. Surprisingly, she never dies. Stroke of Luck was pretty good and all right to read. Some parts got kinda long and boring, so, I skipped over 'em.
One of Cracks famous *short* fics. It was the second weird comedy that she wrote, the first was Oh Boy….or Girl? where Jack is pregnant. Weird? *snickers* The title of Newsies in Tights sorta says it all of what the fic is about - newsies in tights, duh. It's very hilarious especially the very beginning with all the newsies asking Wisecracks why they have to wear pink. LOL!
Dude, I was shocked that one of my fics got nominated! Especially b/c it was my first weird comedy/listee fic! I'm very proud of my RC fic. Didn't know I could write comedy like that, but I proved myself wrong. Hope this one goes down in history.
Basically the Herbie series has been lost to the world for some time now, so, most of all Newsies fans now don't know what it is. I've never read it before either, but have heard a lot of things about it like being the most funnest fic written. It's about - I think - a chicken newsie? Hmm…
Talk about deserving of being a legendary fic! I think this was one of the only fics Fox ever wrote. For a good while, I had heard how hilarious The Truth Behind Denton's Bowties, but never could find it online. No one could! Fox finally put her site back up and I read it. I was crying and laughing SO hard. She really knows how to make a comedy work and flow right instead of just the weird stuff going on all jumbled.
I'm not exactly sure what's Grace's series is considered, but I've read a ton of her fics and enjoyed most of them. Some of her fics are rather boring with the reoccurrence of the same 'formula' type plot. But a few especially the one about Skittery called Melting a Heart of Ice was very good.
I really can't see how people call this a legendary fic. In few words - it sucked. I know it's my opinion, but other peeps have said it too. Basically, the girl ((can't remember her name)) is in love with Blink, but keeps losing him 'er something like that. The only good thing about this fic……the title is cool.
I also have wondered why everyone calls this legendary. Although I know the answer, I just like to wonder :0) Anyways, it's just what the title says - Davey gets even with all the newsies who make fun of him. He exposes their disgusting secrets. I found it very harsh especially about the stuff on Irving Hall. I know one of my fics ((Speaking Sessions)) can be kinda a little related to Davey Gets Even but not quit.
Sarcasm rules! You won't believe how much sarcasm Owl puts in her Time Travel Series, it's wonderful! I really enjoyed her series especially the first and last fic in it. It's not really you're average girl goes back in time to meet the newsies, it's way more and intense then that.
Can't comment on Angela's Series, because I never read it or even seen it on the net.
Oh. My. Garsh. The first *million* times I read Teenyboppers, I like to of hurt myself from laughing so hard. Those two were an incredible comedy team. The title says what it's about…teenyboppers chase the newsies around. There are some major comic parts that will make you laugh so hard you'll cry!
I was literally blown away by Double or Nothing. I had never read a fic filled with such emotion! And it was very heavy reading. It's about Racetrack and how he came to be at the Manhattan LH. The plot may sound formula as usual, but it's not! The fic is split into two stories in one, going back and forth from present to past. I was so moved by Double or Nothing, I was shaking. This is definitely a legend in the Newsieverse. Other Spitfire picks that I possibly can't review on b/c this'll turn into a Spitfire dedication page ;) But these are her other works that are worthy of being legends: You Don't Get Your Money Back, Clowning Around, Where Angels Fear to Tread, and Only Living.
No, it's not about Crutchy. It really isn't even about the newsies themselves though they are in it. Gimp is about a guy with very bad luck who has run 'in's with the bulls, newsies, and an indepenant girl. It took me a long time to getting around to reading this fic, but that's okay. I loved how the story flowed and felt for Robert ((he really isn't a gimp, just a clumsy guy with bad luck)). It was great! Once again, I have some more Action Monroe fics to mention that are legendary to me: David's Silence - a wonderful fic about David finding something beautiful in the Refuge; Poet - another fic not about the newsies, but they're in it. Poet is a guy who just loves to write and find beauty in o everything...even a prostitute who doesn't want his help.
Hardly anyone, I bet, has read this fic. People should read it though b/c it's really intriging! Scars and Memories is about a girl named Roach who gets thrown into the refuge and has an encounter with Francis Sullivan. It's not really a 'love' interesing thing. It's more about friendship of two young kids who come together ((and help one another)) in an odd place. Dusty knows how to capture your attention with just the ways she describes things. The sequel I'm Here Now is as good as the first fic.
Y'know how everyone hates Sarah? Well, this is about Sarah and no, she doesn't die. In Looking Through a Mirror, Sarah exaimes her life...with college, her family, newly met Jack Kelly, and just everything that is going on. It really puts a new perspective on the Jacobs family. Things arn't what they seem! The way 4ever described how Jack was Sarah's mirror was totally unique and creative. It made you think.
The only reason I read this fic was b/c it was submited to one of my fanfic contest. I got a surprise! Dolls was such a great, unique fic! Bumlets is the lead character. He's friends with a doll maker, but the doll maker's shop is going out of buisness. Bumlets is given a doll, but something is strange about it. He starts falling in love with it. The other newsies think he's gone crazy, even Bumlets thinks he's gone a little out of it. That's until he finds out the reason he's in love with this doll. hehe, didn't wanna give away the ending b/c it's a lovely fic and there are a few surprises :)
Oh man, this is a good one. I remember when Filly got the idea for it. I was in the eGroups chat room with her at the time, and she goes "I'm going to write a fic about biker newsies! Want to be in it?" and I'm like "Uh...okay". At first, I thought the idea was kinda blah. But when I read the first part, I knew it'd be great...even a legend! Anyways, if you haven't guessed, it's about the newsies in present day as a biker gang. They kidnapped some barmaids and just a lot of things happen. It's a great fic that I'm glad I was put in!
