"That Others May Live"
Stafford Volunteer Rescue Squad, Inc. was formed on April 10, 1973, with just ten members, incredibly, one of these members is still actively running with us.
The proof of need for this service came only twelve hours after its inception, when Rescue One responded to an automobile accident on Interstate 95.
This organization was unique in the fact that it had both men and women as active members responding to calls twenty-four hours a day and elected the first woman line officer in the area. Following along the same line, in 1975, a female Captain was elected to head the area's first Junior Rescue Squad.
Through the years, this squad has grown and expanded further then any of the founders could have ever imagined. They started out being housed with the Stafford County Fire Department (Company 2). In the fall of 1974, the Squad was given permission to use the Massey Building located on Route One in the courthouse complex.
Over the years, this structure had served as a Ford dealership, grocery store, service station and fire house - the first home for Company Two. The aged building was in very bad shape -- in fact, it had been condemned before the Squad moved in. Strong desire and willingness to work overcame some severe conditions such as rats, snakes and no heat or air-conditioning at times. This structure was torn down after the newly constructed squad building was completed in 1980. Many members worked long and hard to keep costs low so we were able to afford this new home.
In the early days, our calls were dispatched by phone from the sheriff's department, later by radio, then to our current 911 system. Here again, people that were once members or are currently members of Rescue One had a lot to do with this evolution.
In 1974, the cost of one of our ambulances was $4,437 for the purchase of a van and an additional $9,000 to convert it so it would meet the state standards for an ambulance. Today, the base cost for a new ambulance is about $90,000; no equipment is included in this figure. We now have a fleet of three Advanced Life Support Units and two First Response Units.
Rescue One has played a major role in helping other area squads get their start. Assisting with training in 1975, Widewater Rescue was formed. In 1977, Stafford Volunteer Rescue Squad provided a vehicle and equipment to assist Rockhill Rescue Squad get established. This substation became independent in January 1980. Between 1979 - 1983, members worked to get Mountainview Rescue established. Several of Rescue One's members lived in the Mountainview area so, when the time came, Mountainview was nearly self-sufficient and became independent in 1985. With the loan of an ambulance, Stafford Rescue helped Aquia Harbor Rescue Squad get its start five years later.
