- *** Scream 2 opens great. I mean, if you have read anything I wrote about the original Scream, you would think nothing could compete with it. I awarded it The Best Horror Movie of All Time. Fortunately, Scream 2 was very worthy of the Scream name. It opens with a young black couple going to see the movie Stab (based on the book, The Woodsboro Murders, by Gale Weathers). Everyone is given a Stab costume on the way in, and the theater is a wild mess. But, soon, we find out someone is so inspired by the Woodsboro murders, that they decide to continue what the killer started. One of the most effective things about Scream 2 is it actually is scarier. When a female character is stabbed (I'm not telling who), the expression on her face is more gut-wrenching than almost any horror movie scene ever. The suspense, the darkness, and the scary shit is far superior to any horror movie in recent history, including Scream 1. You have a good time predicting when the killer will jump out, and sometimes you're right (but isn't that the point of Scream). Another surprise from Scream 2 is the killing of some of our dearest characters, who have put so much into the series that I actually wonder what drugs Kevin Williamson was on what he wrote these scenes. AND NOW, FOR THE RULES. Does it have a bigger body count? Yes, believe me it does. Does it have carnage candy? YES YES YES!!!! Scarier than the original. JOE BOB'S RULE: Anybody can die at any time. ---- This is proven in Scream 2, very effectively. People die in broad daylight, and they are our favorite characters (who also suffer the most painful deaths).
My ONLY complaint about Scream 2 is the identity of the killer. It sure doesn't beat the original on those terms, and I'm not sure it was possible. When you went to see the first, you weren't sitting there going it's this guy, and this guy, and maybe that guy too! You were expecting that in this one. The killer just doesn't compete with Billy and Stu (who are described by Randy in this one as two high school, loser, dickheads). But was this worthy of the name Scream 2? You bet your intestines on that!
