I think it is absolutely fantastic that there is actually a Flashman website. I am a fifteen year old boy from Newcastle, I read my first Flashman book about a year ago, it was 'Flashmans Lady' and I have loved the Flashman series ever since. I am incredi
ly happy that there are more people in the world that recognise that George McDonald Fraser is the best author (bar possibly Shakespear) ever to write a book, and I knew that the internet was the place to find them . I think that the website could do with
more sectiones of text from ALL the Flashman books. I am very interested in getting more involved in this site. How do I become a member?

Damned good show. After thirty years I finally got tired of keeping track of the first round and bought a complete new set of ten that I don't loan out. There is more truth about how things work in Flashy's chronicles than in many a memoir by well know
soldiers and statesmen. I still remember the consternation among some in 1970 when I passed around pens with "Society for the Recovery of Fallen Women" and my number and address on them. Flashy's honorary presidency of a similar society stimulated me
orm my own good will organization.
One hopes GMF has a couple more packets just around the bend.

What ho chaps, a jolly interesting site, damn 'ee.
Many of you ask if Sir Harry is a real or fictional character. Actually he is a total figment of the imagination. Flashy first appeared in Tom Brown's School Days. Various film versions of this English classic have appeared over the years. I do believe th
t Robert Newton appeared in one. What makes readers so doubtful is the acuracy of the historical events and GMF's skill at bringing his character alive.
Sadly, the movie version of Royal Flash seems to no longer be available, but it does get shown on British TV at least once a year. George MacDonald Fraiser wrote the screenplay for it. He also wrote screenplays for the James Bond movie Octopussy and Richa
d Donner's versions of The Three Musketeers, The Four Musketeers and The Return of The Musketeers, amongst others.
If you're having trouble getting hold of the books around the world, they are published in Great Britain by HarperCollins. Their address is:
HarperCollins Publishers
77-85 Fulham Palace Road,
Hammersmith, London, W6 8JB.
I feel I must recommend GMF's novel The Pyrates, which is a spoof pirate adventure. I enclose a brief example from pages 17-18 to get your juices flowing (I'm sure GMF won't mind as long as some of you buy the book).
"Aaargh!" cried the burly captain, twice for emphasis. "Aaargh! Easy, handsomely, I say, wi' they chests, rot 'ee! 'Tis ten thousand pound you'm carryin', ye lubbers!" This was his normal habit of speech, since anything else would have been incomprehensib
e to his crew. "A pesky parlous cargo it be an' all, an' glad am I to be rid on't, burn me for a backstay else."
"Not as glad as my garrison will be to see it," replied the fort commandant, a stout and sunburned soldier who was equally perfect casting in his buff coat, large belly, and plumed hat. "Three years without pay is a long time in such lonely fortalice as t
is." He hesitated, and ventured to add: "Damme for a lizard else."
"Aaargh!" said the captain thoughtfully. "A lizard eh? Humph! Us seamen don't use to swear by no crawlin' land-lubbery varmints, us don't. Handspikes an' marlin-spikes an' sich sailory things be good enough for we, by the powers, choke me wi' a rammer els
. Howbeit," he went on, "I be mortal glad to see the back o' these damned dollars; a thousand leagues from old England be a long way wi' such a lading, through pirate waters an' all, d'ye see, rot me for a Portingale pimp if I bain't." And he dashed the s
eat from his brow with a horny hand. "Aye, split an' sink me, a risky v'yage, look'ee, a passage right perilous, and happy I am 'tis done wi', an' they dubloons snug i' the cellar at last, scuttle me for a-"
"How about some supper?" said the commandant quickly.
"Vittles, sez you!" cried the captain, rolling both eyes. "Why, then vittles it is, sez I, wi' all my heart, aye an' a flagon o' ale, devil a doubt, or Spanish vino, sa-ha! to wet our whistles, an' damn all, wi' a curse. Scupper me wi' a hand-spike," he a
ded triumphantly, "else."
Anyway, that's enough of that. Flashy fans are welcome to drop me an Email. Keep up the good work.

I have long suspected that "Sir Flashy" had something to do with starting the Lincoln County War in 1878 New Mexico. I believe a delving into the records will prove that Flashman met and may have advised Lt. Col. Nathan Augustus Monroe Dudley, 9th U.S. (B
ffalo Soldiers) Cavalry, of whom Governor Lew Wallace was told in a letter was, "impetuous, vindictive, overbearing, self-conceited and meddlesome." Dudley continued on his merry, oblivious way, bouncing up the army chain of command, proving the old adage
that only cream and bastards rise. Dudley died in Roxbury, Mass. in 1910. He may have met Flashy while both were "poodle-faking" in the East. Dudley's part in the Lincoln County War was shameless! Before setting the McSween house on fire in order to flush
out the "damned Scot and his Irish ruffian associate(Billy Bonney/Billy the Kid)", Dudley was confronted by Susan McSween, who told him his being in town with his troops looked "too thin". Dudley answered, "I don't understand such slang phrases. The ladie
I associate with don't use such language, and I don't know what you mean by the phrase 'too thin'." Most ungentlemanly! If Sir Flashy had anything to do with advising Dudley in his actions, then damn his eyes!

Crimean War in an alternative history where USA never broke off from England...but check out the unnamed British colonel...he has a Rugby accent, is a galloper for Raglan, has served in Afganistan and the Sikh War, gets red in the face when danger appro
ches ,even Lee admits that "he can Ride" etc. etc. The ending of the story bummed me out though...oh well it's nice to relay this to someone who will know what I'm talking about and really as before I got carried away..nice site

collection of Harry Flashman novels. I sense that John may have patterned his life after Sir Harry. (I hope that is the case.)

"wogs" does not mean 'westernized oriental gentleman': it was the acronym, embroidered into the armbands of labourers in the Port Said dockyards: and meant: 'WORKING ON GOVERNMENT SERVICE' (instead of a simple identily card.
Likewise, the australian POME (pronounced pommie), meant: Prisoner of Mother England
and the swear word (or otherwise) FUCK, was the acronym carved into the headboard of the stocks in the 16th century where convicted adulterers were pilloried: and meant
'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge'.
All the above acronyms relate to his lordship either in name or self-admitted feat.

I have read "Flashman","Royal Flash", and "Flashman at the Charge"
All are excedingly good novels. George MacDonald Fraser should win the pulitzer prize for his works. The Flashman series reminds me of "me' when I have served on active duty in the U.S. Army, and in the reserves..!!
Anyway, Frasers historical accuracy should be complemented, I have learned more about history from his novels than sitting in a boring classroom!!!

I`ll say this for ye Culpepper, You set a horse well, and you wear a Uniform the way one should be worn, but how are ye on the Cricket field? Where do you find all those fun places to play ?!! Leads one to think you California Jr. Officers have too much
ime on your hands. A good mindless war is all you chaps need to set you right again eh what ?

Gadfry, do you little toadies think you could curry favor with Sir Harry, with this transparent bit of arse kissing ? ByGod Sir , it`s been tried Sir. Even an excellent try such as yours, is doomed to failure! It`s easy to see you are a small cadrie of J
. Officers hoping to win advancement with your brown nosing efforts. Damn your eyes men , do like all British fighting men have done, stop thinking!!! " Ours is not to reason why" and all that.... eh What?
