Phil Sheriden's wedding in Chicago. Dined with Spotted Tail & Young Frank Standing Bear {they're in white tie & tails} at the Grand Pacific & then the Theatre.
Invited to the Capital, Poodle-faking with Washington society. Elspeth wants to tour the Wild West. Crossed paths with U.S. Grant & Senator Allison. At Grants request became British observer & translator for the U.S. Commission on Treaty Negotiations with the Sioux & N. Cheyenne Nations.
Arrived at Camp Robinson & dined with Gen. Terry, Maj. Anson Mills {Mills Belt inventor}, etc. Spotted Tail, Red Cloud, etc. Sen. Allison & Little Big Man bugger Black Hills treaty at the Camp Robinson talks, Maj. Mills leading 6th cavalry & Y.F. Standing Bear leading braves head off a massacre. Concluded Elspeth's western tour after talks failed with a rail journey through the Rockies & a hunting trip in Colorado.
......... In New York for the winter, Elspeth involved in the preparations for the Centennial celebration & Worlds Fair in Philadelphia. Crossed paths & dined with Col. G.A. & Libby Custer, after Custer shed manly tears {on several occasions} asked for help in pleading his case to U.S. Grant in the Belknap affair.
Invited to look into investment properties by a Mrs. Arthur B. Candy {real stunner eye-patch & all} in Bismarck. Via rail visited with Gen. Terry, Col. Custer, etc., while waiting for Mrs. Candy to arrive. Steamed up the Missouri & Yellowstone river's on the paddle-wheeler Far West with Mrs. Candy for the land speculation. Caught up with the army at the mouths of the Powder, Rosebud & Bighorn rivers, was in on staff meetings held onboard to plan the campaign.
Shanghaied! Hied off by Sioux bucks doing the bidding of Mrs. Candy {ye-gads Cleonie Grouard} to their encampment in the Bighorn valley. Escaped, raced to warn Custer off & witnessed their defeat on the Greasy Grass, then dressed as a Cheyenne Dog-Soldier got away with the help of Standing Bear {Crook's scout Frank Grouard, the resemblance was uncanny}.
Rode into Deadwood, hocked watch, cleaned up & in new rig ran into & dined with J.B. Hickock who returned the watch. The next day seen off on the Deadwood stage, broke down in front of the Number Ten Saloon, was just walking inside when J.B. was murdered.
