You don't fool with Mother Nature, spit into the wind, remake
Casablanca, or trash the land of Oz. Perhaps that is why the 1985
live-action sequel split critics and audiences alike. The 1939 classic
musical is so beloved that it's almost impossible to imagine seeing
Dorothy in shock therapy, a crumbled yellow brick road, the ruins of
Emerald City, and the Tin Man turned into stone. But L. Frank Baum, the
author of the original Oz books, portrayed just that with his continuing
stories of Dorothy. When you get by these tough facts, the film version
is solid entertainment for the over-7 set.
Dorothy (a 10-year-old Fairuza Balk in her debut) is back in Kansas,
where Aunt Em (Piper Laurie) is at the end of her rope: her niece is not
sleeping and going on about a place called Oz. Therapy may be the
answer, but luckily the scary clinic goes dark before Dorothy can be,
er, cured (but the lead-up will scare the munchkins out of most kids).
She wakes up in the land of Oz, now in tatters, and searches for its
king, the Scarecrow. A new set of friends, including a tin soldier, a
talking chicken, and a pumpkin man, help her against new villains,
including Princess Mombi (Jean Marsh)--complete with a set of detachable
heads--and the evil Nome King (Nicol Williamson with a great assist from
Will Vinton's Claymation). The sole directorial effort of Oscar-winning
editor Walter Murch is stuffed with marvelous effects that foreshadow
later works by Tim Burton and the Henson non-Muppet films. Doug Thomas

?My mother told me about a
"Wizard" museum she went to on Beech Mountain, NC. She thinks it was called "The Land of Oz". Has any body heard of
it? It's no longer open(boo hoo :< ), but I'd like to hear stories about it if any one has been.
The Land of Oz was located on the top of Beech Mountain, NC.  It was in
operation from 1970-1980.  In the 10 years after the park closed there
was a great deal of vandalism and neglect, leaving the place just a rotting pile of
rubble.  Since 1990, there has been an attempt by the Emerald Mountain
Development to restore much of what was great about this magical place.  You
can actually stay at "Dorothy's House".
I lived on Beech Mountain as a child and vaguely remember visiting the Land
of Oz.  It was a great theme park with a tour (as though you are Dorothy)
through Munchkin Land, down the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City and
back with a click of the Ruby Slipper heels to Aunt Em's house.  It had a hot
air balloon ride that was very unique. If you want any more information, let me know.
~~Laurel~~

The "Land of Oz" theme park opened at Beech Mountain, NC, in 1970.  It
operated about 10 years before closing.  The park property fell into
disrepair but has recently been renovated and developed as a condominium
community, Emerald Mountain.  There are some pictures from the original
park at <www.emeraldmountain.com>, and memorabilia from the park is on
display at the Appalachian Cultural Museum in Boone, NC.
Visitors to the park rode a gondola (Beech Mountain is a ski resort in
the winter) to the top of the mountain, where they walked through a
small museum of Oz memorabilia.  They entered a small white farmhouse;
where audiovisual effects simulated the approach of a tornado.  Guides
led them into a basement; they exited through a different door into a
topsy-turvy version of the farmhouse.  From there, they walked a
yellow-brick path through the woods, where they passed separate "houses"
for the Tin Man, Scarecrow, Lion and Witch; each character came out and
performed a song/dance routine for the visitors.  The Emerald City was
at the end of the path; it featured a magic show, a balloon ride and
other entertainment. ~~KK~~

 ? I remember a professor in college
telling me all about how the Wizard of Oz is a political allegory of the
climate at that time in history.  I am looking for information on that.
I think I have a whole newspaper article on how the movie was supposed to relate to the 'sign of the times' the year it was made.  It talks of the TinMan in tearms of the alloy tin, and of the Emerald City in tearms of the precios stone (the emerald), and of how the 'Oz' represents oz.(ounce).  It is really quite interesting. ~~Allison~~

I would love to get that article from you!! I'm still not sure what your email address is. Hope to hear from you. ~~Renee~~

? I was wondering if you knew about a scene involving a giant spider which
has been cut out of the current versions of the movie being played. The
scene was just before Dorothy was kidnapped by the flying monkeys. Also,
the witch refers to sending an insect to take the fight out of the
foursome before she sends the flying monkeys to capture Dorothy. Any
response would be appreciated.
Answer to the question of the wicked witch sending an insect to the haunted forest: it was a jitterbug. In my copy of the 30th anniversary release in 1988, the footage following the movie shows pieces of the movie that were cut during the final production and includes some home movie footage of the foursome dancing in the haunted forest to a song called "The Jitterbug" which I assume was the name of the insect. ~~Tammy~~
****
In answer to the one abut the "gaint spider"
it's called the jitterbug and sent dorthy and co. into a
dancr fenzey making it easier for the winged monkey to
capture dorthy and co. The scene was cut due to time and
the producer thought that the song was to upbeat for movie
the "jitterbug" can be heard on some of the soundtracks
of the  Wizard of Oz. ~~Ally~~
The insect that the witch was going to send ahead of the monkies to take the fight out of the foursome was the jitterbug.  The scene was cut out of the movie but if you have the special edition home video it shows a clip of this and I believe there is an explanation. This is where the song the jitterbug come from which was also cut out of the movie but is available on some soundtracks.
~~DIANE~~
Who knew! I knew about the dance sequence that was taken out called the jitterbug. But I didn't know the story behind it thanks all!! ~~Renee~~

?I was wondering where you can find the
soundtracks, and which one(s)  you would recommend..

You can find a good oz soundtrack at Borders Books and music. There are facts
about the movie inside and lots of pictures in color and black-and-white. Also,
there's a new version of the soundtrack at Warner Bros. Studio Store. ~~TB~~

?I have been looking for the original Dorothy Barbie, and the Wicked Witch of the West Barbie (if they even make such a thing)I  don't think Dorothy is on the sales market anymore. I'm supposeing that I would have to purchase it from a collector. I have also been very interested in buying a soundtrack. Since I haven't beren able to get off my lazy butt to go get one, I was wondering which one you would recommend. I'm seriously considering getting the 2-disk set, if I can find it. That's another thing  would I be able to find it at local music stores, or would I have to go to a video store and special order it? Thanks for your help!

dumb question but i REALLY want some of those!  thanx...
Not a dumb question!!!! They are cute as could be ....it would be a cute addition to a collector. You could stuff them and put ruby slippers on them. ~~Renee~~

FYI
My great grandfather was a photographer in Grand Rapids, MN where Judy was born, he photographed Judy. Visit Judy's Birthplace on the Web. Being born and raised in Mn I will be visiting this summer.

Scatterbrained Crane

For the apple orchard sequence,300 birds were rented from the Zoo park in Los Angeles so that the director could choose a few for a background. A Saurus crane went after Ray Bolger's straw stuffing, sending him to his dressing room until the bird could be restrained.

Out of the Way Lunch Spot

Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, and Bert Lahr had to eat lunch in a bungalo on the MGM lot. When they tried once to dine in the commissary, they were turned away because their faces covered with rubber and fur and aluminum paste offended the other diners.

Lemon Twister

Creating the tornado was the most costly and difficult special effect. Actually a miniature, the first cyclone failed because it didn't twist, a mistake that cost MGM $8000.

Razzle Dazzle

There were one thousand fantastic comstumes and sixty dazzling sets. The movie was in production for two years.

Curiously, Garland, forever to be identified with the wide-eyed Dorothy, was not the first choice for the part; both Shirley Temple and Deanna Durbin were considered for the role.

Had Jean Harlow not died, ending the loan-out deal to exchange her for IN OLD CHICAGO with Temple for OZ, we'd be watching Temple's forthright moppet, instead of Garland's tender waif.

Clara Blandick (Auntie Em) was just as unhappy as she appears; she ended up a recluse who eventually took her own life.

L.B. Mayer's nickname for Garland was his "little humpback.

" The original Wizard was to have been W.C. Fields, the original Tin Man Buddy Ebsen (who fell ill from all the makeup preparation) and the original Wicked Witch was to have been played as an evil siren by Gale Sondergaard.

See if you can hear the female Munchkin who runs forward to Garland and shouts "Judy" instead of "Dorothy" after Hamilton's first exit.

And watch for inconsistencies in Garland's hairstyles during the time she is beautified in OZ.
