Sightseeing, in My Stompin' Grounds?

I was born in Buffalo, raised in the Town of Tonawanda, and now I live in the city. Western New York isn't such a bad place to live, contrary to what you may have heard elsewhere, and I think it's a great place to visit and explore.

Walls & Windows...

I consider myself fortunate to live within walking distance of some of the area's finest visual wonders. Well, they're mostly human-made wonders, but still noteworthy, in my opinion. The architecture of many of the buildings is pretty amazing. From downtown Buffalo's structures such as the Guaranty Building, Ellicott Square Bldg., the old Post Office Bldg. (now Erie Community College), St. Joseph's Cathedral, and City Hall, to the Victorian homes gracing the West Side, there are plenty of interesting designs to witness.

Western NY is home to several buildings designed by the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright. The Darwin Martin House on Jewett Avenue is perhaps the most well known of the local Wright buildings.

Just minutes away by foot from Buffalo State College is a place I enjoy visiting when I feel I need some solitude. I'm talking about the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the surrounding area. Delaware Park begins just to the east of the Gallery. A walk around the lake can be an invigorating experience.

Here are a couple of pictures I took in this vicinity of the Art Gallery.

Waterfalls...

It seems that many people from outside of the state surmise that Buffalo is very close to New York City, if not a little known borough of that metropolis. Who would ever think that my hometown is actually much, much closer to one of the world's Seven Natural Wonders? Well, it is!

Niagara Falls offers numerous spectacular views, and this picture shows just one of them. There is plenty to see and do on both the U.S. and Canadian sides of the border near the Falls.

And Woodchucks!

Other places to enjoy nature in the Buffalo and Western New York area include: Tifft Farm Nature Preserve (Bflo), Stiglmeier Park/Reinstein Woods (Cheektowaga), Beaver Meadow Nature Center (North Java), Akron Falls Park, and Letchworth State Park.
