Hi. My name is Carl Kurtz, and I developed this site as part of
my senior project for my Bachelor of Health Sciences degree from
the Medical University of South Carolina.
For those who are interested, the Bachelor of Health Sciences
degree was developed by MUSC to fill a need for Healthcare Professionals
who had a strong understanding of basic business and/or education.
They felt that no one but healthcare professional could understand
the realities of healthcare well enough to run the various departments
in a healthcare organization or to teach future healthcare professionals
what they need to know, yet the average healthcare employee does
not understand either business or education well enough to do
either well also. But you are not reading this to learn about
that, you came here to find out about me.
I started out with a volunteer ambulance squad when I was seventeen,
and went professional while studying electrical engineering at
Penn State University as a way
to help pay tuition and books. After about two years at Penn State
I found that I enjoyed the ambulance much more than I did engineering,
and after three more years of attending Penn State part time,
I quit to devote myself fully to being a paramedic. Then in 1987,
when it became obvious that I needed a break from working on the
ambulance, I move to Greenville, SC where I worked as a safety
man on a construction crew. After a year and a half of that though,
I realized that I just was not happy outside of the healthcare
field, so I took a job in the Emergency Trauma Center at Greenville
Memorial Hospital and went back to school. In 1992 I graduated
from Greenville Technical College with an associate degree in
Radiologic Technology, worked PRN (a hospital term for as needed)
at St. Francis Hospital and Greenville Memorial for a while, then
accepted a full time position at Roper Hospital in Charleston,
SC. Since then, in addition to my regular hours at Roper, I also
work as a temp occasionally when various doctor offices or clinics
need someone to fill in for their regular techs and I've accepted
a PRN position at M.U.S.C.'s medical center.
I am registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists,
and am a member of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists
which is a professional society dedicated to the betterment and
furthering of Radiologic Technology in general. I will finish
work towards my Bachelor of Health Sciences degree in July
of 1998, and anticipate continuing to attend various courses
and workshops around the state and/or nation to further my goal
of working my way up to a department head position, though given
the way healthcare reform is going, that may take longer than
I first thought it would.
If you like more information about me or my project, please send an e-mail to Carl Kurtz and I'll get back to you as soon as I can
