ABOUT US

The Eastern Transvaal Cerebral Palsy Association covers the area of East Gauteng and the Western areas of Mpumalanga. These areas lie on the Eastern side of Johannesburg in the Republic of South Africa. The cities/towns of Boksburg, Benoni, Springs, Brakpan, Kempton Park and the outlying towns of Nigel, Witbank and Middleburg all fall under the responsibility of the association.

The association has established two centres for cerebral palsy adults and children. Muriel Brand, a school for educable children is set in large grounds in Brentwood, Brakpan. This school teaches children up to the Matriculation Examination. (Senior High School). It also prepares the child for life in the outside world where he/she has to compete for a place in the work market even though in some cases, severly handicapped. The Vita Nova Centre has been established in old mine buildings in Daggafontein Springs. This centre caters for the ineducable child.

The association raises funds mainly through a volunteer body of ladies in the Benoni area. This group of dedicated ladies hold a variety of functions through the year. A very successful Bowls day and Golf day are responsible for the most revenue each year. These are followed by street collections, jumble and cake sales, Pub-nites and catering to various functions. Each year Christmas cards and calendars are sold as well.

The financial burden is extremely heavy and funds are carefully allocated by the Executive committee of the association. This committee consisting of volunteers as well as representitives of Muriel Brand and Vita Nova meet once a month to discuss all aspects of the associations activities. A small office is maintained in Springs, managed by a dedicated young lady (Michelle) who can answer any of your queries.
