FALSE UNICORN
Chamaelirium luteum
Use for chronic indigestion, female disorders, sex organs, impotence, kidneys. False unicorn or nelonian inhabits the eastern part of the United States and Canada (mostly in the province of Ontario). The chief constituents which have thus far been identified in it are chamaelirin (a glucoside), starch, the usual oils, etc. The root has a slight turpentine odor about it and is very bitter. Some of its active properties are similar to those in the terebinth tree of Europe, which yields Chian turpentine. Because of these strong, antiseptic characteristics, the root can cause healthful changes in the body without necessarily eliminating anything, can exert chemical activity on the kidneys, thereby increasing urination can actively promote menstruation where there is a delay in its usual occurrence, and can be marvelous for expelling worms from the intestinal tract. In this area of performance, it rivals only one other herb-pumpkin seeds-for easy evacuation of stubborn tapeworms. It makes a worthwhile tonic for the system in supplying some of the rarer minerals and trace elements needed but often lacking-i.e., Copper, sulphur, cadmium, cobalt, and a trace of zinc. Some molybdenum is also present, but in too small an amount to sufficiently analyze. This is an excellent root for both men and women alike to take. In men it will cleanse and strengthen the reproductive organs (mostly the testicles) and in women will work on the ovaries in a similar fashion. For those with delicate health it is advised not to rely upon it in a single form alone, but rather have it combined with other herbs in a preparation of this sort. This is due to the strong turpentine constituents contained in it. Some herbalists have attributed possible fertility virtues to it even going so far as to suggest that it might help a woman to conceive. But such ideas are folklorical in aspect and are not necessarily reflected in serious laboratory research done with this root. Science has yet to verify some of the myths propagated by the superstitious who use herbs-and this is one of them.

FANG FENG
Sileris

FENNEL
Foeniculum vulgare (common)
Foeniculum dulce (florence)
Time of administration: morning, afternoon evening.
Strong appetite suppressant. Alkalizes over acid digestive system, helps eliminate gas from the lower intestine, remedies gout, cramps and spasms. Excellent for obesity, good eyewash, very good liver cleanser. Increases the flow of milk and relieves colic in infants. Key nutr, fatty acids, thiamine, potassium, calcium. Fennel seeds yield a special carminative oil which is recognized effective to prevent colic in infant children and also to eliminate embarrassing flatulence from the intestinal tract, which often accompanies bean eating. Fennel seeds contain about 1-4% volatile oil. When they are powdered, this is reduced to about 2%. The active constituents of the oil are a phenolic ether, anethole, and fenchone. The phenolic ether has antiseptic virtues, the anethole serves as an intestinal stimulant, and the fenchone acts as an internal anesthetic. All of these activities mostly take place in the bowels.

FENNEL FLOWER
Nigella sativa

FENUGREEK
Trigonella foenum-graecum
Use for tuberculosis, bronchitis, gout, sexual stimulant. Good for sinuses, used for allergies, coughs, digestion, emphysema, headaches, migraine, intestinal inflammation, ulcers, lungs, mucous membranes and sore throat. Fenugreek seeds are a strong, mucilaginous antiseptic and quickly kill infection of any kind in the lungs. The alkaloids trigonelline and choline are partly responsible for this. But the major antiviral activity the seeds is found in the three milligrams of nicotinic acid that each one contains. The nicotine in tobacco destroys parasites. An infusion of the seeds has been used in the past in India, to treat smallpox with. This demonstrates the incredible action the nicotinic acid in the seeds has on viruses of this sort. The seeds also contain a saponin closely related to those in yncca. They are rich in lecithin as well. The chemical constituents in the seeds are said to be similar to quinine in strength. The oil in the seeds is an ideal insect repellent and they are mixed in with grains to keep bugs away during storage. Fenugreek is one of several herbs that comprises curry powder.

FEVERFEW
Tanacetum parthenium
Chrysanthemum parthenium
Chrysanthemum matricaria (golden)
A natural remedy for arthritis and , migraine. The leaves possess special enzymes that have analgesic and anti-, inflammatory properties. Key nutr. Pyrethrum, camphor, terpene. Reduces inflammation in arthritic joints helps restore the liver to normal function.

FIGS
Ficus carica
Time of administration: morning and evening (generally when cool conditions prevail). Use for constipation, boils carbuncles, lung inflammations, lymphatic cancer, warts (stems and leaver only). Recent investigation has shown that an active ingredient, benzaldehyde, is a very effective carcinostatic agent for reducing certain kinds of tumors found in the neck, throat, and general lymphatic system (particularly the adenoids). How this is done, of course, awaits further scientific clarification in the future. (Setsuo Takeuchi et al, "Benzaldehyde as a Carcinostatic Principle in Figs", Agricultural and Biological Chemistry 42:144~51, July 1978).
