The Marvels of Goatmilk

The Marvels of Goat Milk

By Dr. R.B. Dame

"And thou shalt have goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of they household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens." Proverbs 27:27.

Milk, as a food, has long been recognized as the most nearly complete food. And since the days of King Solomon, goat's milk has been held by the informed as being superior to any other kind.

For many years, misinformation and ignorance have prejudiced many against the goat and her gifts to mankind. The average person draws his mental image of the goat from the worst specimen; the "hillbilly grade" or what used to be called the "alley goat" and the libelous caricatures common to the funny papers.

In some sections poor types of goats are used for brush and weed clearance. This is doubtful farming practice, and certainly not the typical or preferred diet of the modern dairy goat.

Since Brucellosis Abortus (Undulant Fever) and Poliomyelitis (Infantile Paralysis) along with many other serious diseases are believed by some authorities to stem from dairy products from livestock pastured on worn-out land, Mr. Dairyman needs not only to correct this, his weakness, voluntarily--but to be compelled by legislation to use better farming practices. "Fungus ferment" develops in the heat of midsummer on short pastures. A goat browses and WILL NOT TOUCH SUCH PASTURE UNLESS STARVED TO IT. Therefore, she cannot be listed as a producer of the serious ailments of mankind. Her milk is the most perfect of Nature's foods.

Cow's milk may be a good food for an adult or infant with a strong, healthy stomach; but, because of the fact that it forms a hard, tough curd it is very bad for those with weak or diseased stomachs. Goat's milk is just the opposite. It forms a soft, small, easily digested curd in the human stomach and eases the digestive process.

Today, with good feeds available, there is no excuse for improperly maintained livestock, and milk from properly fed goats contains ALL the known vitamins and a large number of the rare mineral elements so necessary to the proper maintenance of human health. Goat's milk is, therefore, highly beneficial in assisting the correction of cases of stomach ulcer, tuberculosis, diabetes, eczema and many others because these diseases are caused by "hidden hunger" (a lack in the diet of one or more of these vital, rare food elements.) Proper sustenance is contributory to a peaceful disposition. Hidden hunger, due to an unbalanced diet, is the cause, in many cases, of criminality and insanity.

Let us consider the vitamins and mineral elements. Milk to be a good food must contain all of them. Milk from properly fed goats DOES contain all of them, or nearly so, almost all of the time. ("Goat's milk is pure white and naturally homogenized. However, the butter fat may be separated mechanically, and excellent butter and the world's finest cheeses are made from it.)

In dealing with the vitamins in sequence we will consider first, Vitamin A in its daily operation of controlling the normal functions of the internal organs of the body. In animal form it is often referred to as Carotine, and in plant form as Cryptoxanthin. It seems to fortify the animal to some extent against diseases attacking the visceral system. Of course what is true in animals is largely true in the human being. A lack of Vitamin A is always indicated by loss of weight, general debility, particularly weak eyes, susceptibility to infection, and tendency to slow healing of wounds, and pronounced indications of kidney and bladder stones.

Now let us consider Vitamin B complex as contained in the milk of well fed goats. Many people suffering from arthritis have been greatly benefited, and in many cases, have entirely recovered, and attributed their recovery to the use of goat's milk which builds up the entire body and thus their resistances.

Vitamin B1 considered singly is known as Thiamine Chloride. In normal cases it stimulates the appetite and fortifies the individual against ailments arising from nervous exhaustion. Evidence of the lack of Vitamin B1 are unwarranted fatigue and exhaustion, digestive disturbances and poor assimilation.

Vitamin B2, commonly known as Riboflavin, promotes growth and general health, prolongs the span of life and is necessary to nerve tissues and cell respiration. In the event there is a deficiency in the amount of B2 consumed, there is a general breaking down of the nervous system, loss of hair, lack of vigor, skin eruptions. B2 is often referred to in conjunction with Niacin which is otherwise known as Nicotinic Acid or Nicotimanide, and is considered necessary to the normal functioning of the peripheral areas of the digestive tract. Evidences of a deficiency are skin infections as thrown off by the uric glands, diarrhea and general bodily disorganization.

Pyridoxine, often referred to as a source of correction of anemia is of great assistance in overcoming general physical disorganization.

B12 has taken on vast importance in recent years and is frequently mentioned as a catalizer in the human system. The physician often administers it hypodermically to people of advanced years thus assisting them in the elimination of unnecessary chemicals in the body.

Ascorbic Acid, otherwise known as Cevitamic Acid is considered necessary to normal development of good teeth and proper functioning of the uric glands and the normal function of the tissue in the process of respiration. To it also is attributed some control over the indocrine glandular functions. This Vitamin C is usually attributed the power to insure the individual against being crippled by disease.

Vitamin D1 is absorbed by vegetation and is ordinarily procured by the animal or human through the consumption of green vegetables. Withered, dried or canned vegetables that have been processed so as to destroy the chlorophyl which seems essential to their coloring have been rendered to a certain degree, unfit for food, or at least not equal to fresh vegetables which have been uncooked or re-heated. Vitamin D2, however, is absorbed by the individual from the rays of the sun and its chemical differentiations have never been clearly defined. It is necessary therefore to the assimilation of calcium and phosphorus in preventing rickets, vertigo and mental instability. It regulates the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus and is therefore essential to the growth of bones and teeth and the development of the skeleton. This combination is frequently referred to as the antirachitic vitamin.

Vitamin E is chemically known as Alphatocopherol, and in animal life seems to stimulate fertility while in the human it has been attributed the power to enable the individual to think, and have creative mental processes.

The normal human being is supposed to adapt himself to many different activities. In the event he is unable to do so we frequently hear mention of a deficiency of Coline. This seems to lend a sort of balance to mental processes enabling him to attain greater success than would be possible without it.

We now come to the factor U plus R which is sometimes called Vitamin Bc (or Vitamin MO or Folic Acid) which seems necessary to the hemaglobin in the blood in its process of maintaining normal body weight. Another name for Folic Acid is ptercylglutamic acid and in conjunction with para-aminobenzoic acid, produces amino acid which is considered an important part of the enzymes.

With the foregoing in mind we turn now to the rare trace minerals found in analysis of goat's milk:

MAGNESIUM: which has a de-acidizing effect throughout the body, principally in the digestive juices.

POTASSIUM: in its natural form operates as a diuretic and a purgative in clearing cases of dropsy, rheumatism, and skin diseases.

CALCIUM: is particularly beneficial in the operation of Osteo-Blasts and Osteo-Clasts in their operation of bone construction and reconstruction.

SODIUM: which is necessary to the elimination of diseases of the skin, ligaments, tissues and bones in general.

IRON: in this natural form improves the hemoglobin and thus acts as a deterrent of anemia.

SULPHUR: attacks the diseases of the skin as well as disorders of the respiratory organs, and is a natural enemy of disorders of the colon which are mainly responsible for hemorrhoids and constipation.

ZINC: to which is attributed the power to attack disorders of the respiratory organs and seems to eliminate the causes of epilepsy, and chorea, neuralgia, gastralgia and cardiac disturbances.

GOLD: in this form, which seems to be manufactured in some inexplicable way in the heart and cooperates with other elements in destroying dysfunctions of creativeness.

COPPER: assimilated through natural sources counteracts hysterias and nervous disease and cooperates with other elements in correcting exhaustion of the functions of the body.

Next let us consider Archadic Acid which acts as a counter balance in food elements so that they can normally convert high protein oil, found only in peanuts, soya beans and goat milk in digestible combinations, enabling the individual to assimilate these. From the foregoing, you will find an outline of the chemistry of goat's milk and the reason it is so much more valuable than cow's milk. An analysis shows that cow's milk has only 310 calories of bodily food value while goat's milk has 364.

A great advantage is found in goat's milk because the fat globules are so much finer than those in cow's milk that they stay in suspension in the milk itself, thus enabling one to get more benefit from it.

The following table gives the comparative food value of ten generally popular foods to equal one quart of goat's milk:

Eggs..................8 Oysters............3 1/3 lb.
Lean Beefsteak........1 lb. Oranges............7
Chicken...............1 lb. Tomatoes...........6
Peas..................1 2/3 Codfish............3 1/5 lb.
Spinach...............5 Bananas............6
In condensed form the table below [lists] the chemicals and rare base minerals known to be in this quart of goat's milk:
        Lactose Iron Magnesium
        Casein Sulphur Potassium
        Chlorine Zinc Calcium
        Phosphorus Gold Sodium
        Iodine Cobalt Copper
                             Archadic Acid

In these days of tense living, many people are afflicted with excess acid in the stomach. With that thought in mind I submit the following diets. The following foods will aggravate acid stomachs:

Sugar, cow's milk, raw apples, vinegar, black pepper, tomatoes, onions, peaches, pears, berries, starchy foods, white bread, rolled oats, cream of wheat, dried beans.

Foods that will not aggravate these acid stomach conditions are:

Goat's milk, whole wheat bread, all vegetables except dried beans, whole wheat cereals, red meat, chicken, fish, honey, grapefruit, oranges and lemons (avoid the peel at all times), raisins, figs and dates.

In giving these tables my thought is to enable the seeker after health to discover Nature's way and escape that apparition (Hidden Hunger) which is pursuing him. We must always remember that I am speaking of NATURAL goat milk from the highest type of blood tested animals and not that which has had these chemicals destroyed by processing. I am not speaking of goat's milk as a cure, but rather as an agent, to be consumed nutritionally to enable Nature to make the cure.

We have it on the authority of Dr. David Roberts of Waukesha, Wisconsin, that Dr. Henry Mayo of the Mayo Clinic of Rochester, Minnesota, always carried with him whenever and wherever the need was expedient, his dairy goat to furnish him with his supply of goat's milk.

Therefore, I am entrusting the information in these pages to those who are seeking enlightenment upon facts concerning the wonderful benefits possible through the use of goat's milk. There is much to be said on the subject and in my own small way, with malice toward none, to give the Goat Breeder, the Goat Dairies, and the Dairy Goat herself, a "break". With that thought in mind I surrender these, my findings, to the tender of those who have come to know Her Gentle Majesty The Dairy Goat.---Dr. R.B. Dame.

PUBLISHER'S TESTIMONY

While I am a vegetarian by choice, I have found great benefit from the use of one to two gallons of goat milk per week in combination with fresh fruit. The republishing of Dr. Dame's article in no way represents full agreement by the publisher with the "facts" as stated by Dr. Dame. However, it is my desire that all persons seeking health would have the opportunity to discover for themselves those substances which have potential to benefit their individual systems.
