Hair that detangles usually has cuticle damage. Cuticle
damage is due to many things including:
- - High pH product use
- - Heat
- - Chemical abuse ( color /perms/ relaxers)
- - Mechanical damage ( over or improper brushing)
Cuticles are like shingles on a roof. They should
lie down flat. For any of the about reasons they may break apart or raise
up. When flat the cuticle layer make the ahir naturally shiney. When damaged
it makes the hair dull (the light defracts). Also, when cuticle layers
are raised ot damaged they tend to "grab" or "catch on to"
other hair shafts. This causes datangles.
The solution is to make the cuticle layer lay down
flat. This is the best way (there are others I'll mention). A low pH conditioner
pH 3.0 - 3.5 will compact the cuticle . This is the best way to create
shine, and tangle free hair. It is one of the best things you can do to
your hair on a daily basis. These products are called "acidifiers".
Recommendations:
- 1) Nexxus Ensure
- 2) Paul Mitchell "The Rinse"
- 3) Paul Mitchell "The Detangler"
- 4) Paul Mitchell "Seal and Shine"
- 5) L'anza Detangler
- All have a pH of 3.0 to 3.5
Another way t correct the problem is to apply
a "film" to the hair which covers the cuticle and prevents the
hair from tangling. This is not a cure for the problem! It will work though.
- Recommendations:
- 1) Janol®
No Rinse Leave-in Conditioner (excellent!)
- 2) Nexxus Humectress ( not a detangler -
a moisturizer)
- 3) Paul Mitchell "The Cream" ( has
buily in styling properties!)
- 4) Redken pHinal Phase
